“Really bad experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2012

Let's start with good things about this hotel. Great location, clean rooms, fairly equipped. That's it... Pretty expensive low budget hotel.
Less pleasent things... Unprofessional and extremely unfriendly reception staff. Just look at one of recent reviews. Couple of times we applied with question and got the feeling of "well... what now?". It went even worse, when by mistake the personnel performed check-out for one of our rooms day before(!) the schedule. We came back at the evening after our son's Bar-Mizva ceremony and found clean and empty room. They collected our belongings and ... just LOST(!) them!!! The lady at the reception even haven't thought to apologize and didn't report about the incident to her managers. The next day we left the hotel. I was really stupid to trust one of managers that they'll contact us within couple of days and compensate our "losses".
Poor breakfast deserves several words as well. Under any israely standard: no salads - just sliced vegetables, conserved fruits, few kinds of cheap cheese, scrambled egg, bread, burekas... Cheap & minimalistic.

First let me appologize and tell you that we are sorry for your bad experiance at the hotel.
Due to the seriousness of your complaint it is being taking care of directly in front of you ,rather than publicly.
We are certain that at the end we will sort it out.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Montefiori. The location is excellent as you can walk for about 10-15 minutes to the old city and to the restaurants on Jaffa and ben Yehuda streets. It is located on a small pedestrian street, where on Fridays there is an art fair of local artists.
We arrived very early in the morning and the staff, always very helpful, was able to give us a room even though it wasn't check in time yet. That was a plus, after a long trip.
Although the room (and I believe the hotel) was supposed to be non-smoking, the smell of cigarettes was everywhere, including the hairdryer. We ended up buying some air freshener to minimize it.
The room was not very large, but sufficient, and it had a fridge. The bathroom was clean.
The breakfast was buffet style, with plenty of options, with several types of cheeses, breads, cereals, salads, eggs, etc.
Overall, here are the pros:
- Location
- Value for the price
- Staff
Here are the cons:
- Smell of cigarettes
- Could use an update.

Room Tip: Although the hotel is on a small pedestrian street, I would suggest a high floor room, as the inters...

Awesome location, and very quiet street, even it's at the very centre.
My room was very nice, clean sheets, clean bathroom, .. nice colours in the room. Kinda of cozy room. My mattress was good and pillows were good as well. A nice room for one person, charming. My room was closest by the elevator, so it was a bit noicy room but at the night time pleasent. I liked the view from my window, a small pedestrian area and local apartments. No air conditioner needed, it was comfortable room temperature wise.
In my opinion, the breakfast was great. Tasty bread. And i enjoyed the background music there in the mornings: a very unique. The staff did they job well in the restaurant in the mornings!
The cleaning staff was polite and smiley. Staff (male) in the reception were very helpful and polite. They really took seriously if any concerns.
Free laptop use was great, so that i didnt need to carry my heavy laptop from Europe. It was really great that i could check my emails and what was needed from the internet!!!! Awesome!!
The only negative thing was that i had to pay more than a normal prize (single room) because I had made a reservation via booking agency beforehand and there was no way to change it. The reasons were told in a very polite way but I felt sad, I lost money.

Room Tip: avoid room closest by the elevator!!

Me and my GF stayed at this hotel for our 3 day stay in Jerusalem.

Location is perfect, with only a 10 min walk to Jaffa gate of the old city.
The food in the place they use for breakfast "Angelicas grill" is not that good. We tried both dinner and the included breakfast and they weren't that good I am afraid. Luckily there are several nice places around to eat.

The room was ok for our purpose. The beds had too thin duves but we later discovered some extra blankets in the closet. Also the mattress was quite hard, so I woke up several times at night with a bad neck. My GF slept like a rock so this is subject to personal preferences... :)
The service from the personel was great.

Thank you for your review.
We supply in the rooms thin duvets as it is summertime in Israel.Extra blankets can be found in the closet.
As for the matresses, the montefiore hotel has recently replaced all the mattresses to new ones,at the best quality available for the hotel industry in Israel, those mattresses are medium -not soft nor hard,in order to match most peoples need.As you Said,it is a matter of preference...
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you soon again.
Best Regards,
Naama Yemini

First things first. My wife is not easy to please and even she said that this hotel was 'clean' which is high praise indeed. From that start point everything else fitted in to place nicely. I have to say that it was a pain to find the hotel because it is on a small pedestrian area with no parking and a jumbled one way system all around. As long as you don't go down the bus and taxi lane ( like I did) and are a bit patient then you will get there eventually. I stopped nearby and ran in to the hotel to ask about parking. They have an arrangement with a nearby parking lot for 55 NIS per day ( about £9) which was about 5 NIS cheaper than others I saw. Once in the hotel we had 2 rooms. I know some people have claimed that the rooms aren't very big but obviously they are used to American palatial hotels not 3 star Jerusalem city centre hotels. The rooms were perfectly adequate and included a fridge ( which was rather noisy) and a room safe. The rooms don't need to be any bigger because you wont be in them for long. Five minutes walk takes you to the lively Mehane Yehuda market with fantastic food stalls and a 2 minute walk gets you to Ben Yehuda street. About a 10 minute walk ( or 15 with my kids) and you are in the Old City. Breakfast was adequate, perhaps a little basic by the high Israeli standards but we only realised that later in our trip when staying in Tel Aviv and had a much more generous choice. However for normal humans and normal appetites it was all you need to start the day. Staff were helpful and it was a great spot from which to tour Jerusalem.
I have only 1 major complaint and word of warning. Bearing in mind this is quite a popular and busy city centre hotel, the walls and doors are paper-thin and we could hear every noise and conversation throughout our floor. Not great when you have kids trying to sleep and a group of partygoers or American high school kids come back at 1am in full voice. Not the hotel's fault about the other guests but they could do something about the quality of the soundproofing.

The Montefiore is literally around the corner from Ben Yehuda Street and an easy walk to the Old City. It's also very close to the Great Synagogue and convenient to several other shuls frequented by tourists. The rooms are very nice, with spacious bathrooms and TVs, safes, fridges and hotpots in each room. The food was good, but not really anything special. Breakfast was more than adequate, though. They have a Shabbat elevator, which is great if you're observant (but it's the only elevator, so it might be kind of annoying if you're not). And best of all, the price is very reasonable for a hotel in such a prime location.

Room Tip: The hotel faces a malled street, so rooms on the front side are probably the quietest.

We enjoyed our one week stay at the Montefiore. It was our first visit to Israel and picking a hotel had been a bit of punt. It turned out to be a good choice - certainly in terms of value for money. The room we had was not luxurious by any means but it was comfortable and we had all we needed. The location was good - Ben Yehuda St (a pedestrian only street with shops and restaurants) is nearby and so is Jaffa Road where you can catch the light rail tram to the old city very easily (or you could walk there!). The Mahane Yehuda food market is also within walking distance - and worth a visit. Closer at hand there is a supermarket tucked away in the basement of an office building - just two or three minutes walk away from the hotel. The Montifeore was also a good base for trips out of Jerusalem.

An additional positive was the helpfulness of the front desk staff - particularly Andrey Iontel who went out of his way to assist us. My husband was really suffering with toothache and the situation seemed pretty dire. Andrey was terrific - through his direct help the situation was resolved. (Thank you!).

The only real downside was breakfast. It was very ordinary - not in keeping with the rest of the Montefiore experience at all. So all good - except for breakfast.

Room Tip: Our room was on a higher floor overlooking Shatz Street - it was fine.
