“Need to be remembered”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2013

A very nice display and the architecture of the museum is marvellous. We need to remember what happened ocd it's somewhat chilling when you see what's going on today. You'll need plenty of time.
There is also a nice walk to/from mt Herzl.

“Very important to go but do not use a tour guide.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

I know it seems bizarre to give a neutral review to a place like Yad Vashem. Clearly it serves an incredibly important purpose and clearly it is a respectable institution. Honestly, the museum/historical part of this memorial was not particularly remarkable to me; it seemed on par with the New York Holocaust museum or the museums at various concentration camps. Two things are very remarkable: 1. the children's memorial, which is very stark and incredibly effective. 2. the actual memorial purpose of this facility. The last room of the memorial with the images, and the collecting of names, seems to speak to the overarching mission of this facility. I also enjoyed the accounts they have from survivors that are made available to guests.

My one issue, which really effected my experience, was our tour guide. We had a Yad Vashem tour guide and despite being a 3 hour review, I felt we learned almost nothing. We would have learned and felt far more if we'd simply toured by ourselves and read all the available information in the exhibits. Additionally, we were here on an off day, and yet, it was so crowded I genuinely believe it was violating fire code. These tours were all booked by Yad Vashem, and it was so crowded it was actually difficult to move.

As strange as this may sound, our guide actually gave several snippets of inaccurate or biased information. I've done a fair amount of reading about Holocaust history and there were several things said that were in blatant opposition with a lot of other accounts. It seems bizarre that a memorial of such a horrific event would carry any bias, considering how unthinkable it was, but somehow I felt that here. That seems the absolute opposite of the message that should be sent, and unfortunately our tour guide really made the experience, which should have been impactfull, instead somewhat distasteful.

“a must”

It is impossible to understand the history and soul of Israel without understanding the Holocaust, and it is impossible to write a review of the museum. Will only add that you must experience the children's pavillion. The experience will stay with you forever.
