“Must visit in Jerusalem”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

Although this was very crowded and a bit chaotic, it is obviously a very important site to visit, whether or not you are Christian. Very emotional for a lot of people.

“Interesting Historical/Religious Church”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

A fascinating church full of interesting and lovely bits of history/legend. Allow time to see the Golgotha below.

“Strange Atmosphere”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

This should have been a wonderful place to visit, being that it is venerated as the Hill of Calvary, where Jesus was crucified and the place where Jesus was buried, the Sepulchre. But, it was a chaotic, crowded, loud, and strange place. The crowds when we were there were large and rude, with pushing and talking, and picture taking - not like a holy place at all. The church is home to branches of Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and Roman Catholicism. There seems to be a bit of tension between the factions - priests swinging incense without much care who is in their way. The sites to see here are the Golgotha altar, the Aedicule (which contains the Holy Sepulchre), the Rock of Calvary, Chapel of Adam, and the Rotunda. As a tourist in Jerusalem, you have to visit here for the experience of seeing these sights. Perhaps try to visit early or late, not midday.

“Go early!”
Reviewed March 15, 2014 via mobile

Be prepared to be surrounded by lots of people with cameras and irreverence. This was troublesome to me. The very best time to go is about 5:00 or 5:30 am on a weekday. I know this sounds crazy, but usually the only people around at that time are the ones who want a spiritual connection with the place. Weekends are nuts no matter what time you go! The church itself and what it contains are amazing and unforgettable.
