Used Jaffa Gate extensively during my recent stay in Jerusalem, since it is the closest one to the city center where we stayed (and where most tourists usually stay). My step-daughter enjoyed walking down the Mamilla Street (or Mamilla Mall), with it's upscale shopping and dining - as well as sitting on the stairs which lead from Mamilla right up to Jaffa Gate, people-watching.
This is one of the two main Gates to the Old City (Damascus Gate is the rival). From here you enter the Ramparts Walk and Tower of David Museum. The Omar Ben el-Hatab road starting from Jaffa Gate divides the two Christian quarters of the Old City - Christian Quarter lays to your left and Armenian Quarter to your right.
The Gate is certainly a landmark and deserves attention, especially if you know it's history. Note the huge - compared to the gate itself - breach in the wall beside it (which is the main gateway nowadays): it was made for the Kaiser Wilhelm II to enter in 1898.

What I find to be most interesting about the Jaffa Gate, and other old gates in city walls all over the ancient world, is the 90 degree turn within the Gate itself which served at least two functions: in case of invasion the defenders could pick off the invaders in single file as they try to enter; and any horses or chariots would have to slow down as they enter the city. Functional and necessary to the preservation of the city and its peace. Just outside is a new and very modern outdoor shopping mall offering high priced clothing and other goods, but once inside Jaffa Gate the world changes into an ancient maze of market stalls which have changed very little over the centuries. You go from the modern world to the Biblical world in an instant.

Good place to start the tour inside the old city. Nothing really special but really beautiful. I was really amazed when I first saw the place.

Nearest to City Hall lrt, the Jaffa gate is facing the direction to Tel Aviv Jaffa Port; near this gate is the travel companies offices, and tourism information office. Taxi cab here always ask for fix rate, always bargain prices. Nice fine dining restaurant outside the walls are in the Mamilla mall.
