No visit to Jerusalem is complete without a visit to the Old City. Amazing place - a real feel for how life in Jerusalem used to be. Great combinations of the peoples and religions and special places.

Strolling in Old City of Jerusalem you are retracing 3000 years of history :from the first Temple to the Roman times, Christianity,Bizantium, Omayad times, Suleiman the Magnificent (the builder of the actual walls) until the modern times with new sewage manholes near old Roman pavement found during the construction works. Adding to the old beautifully buldings you have a living fortress with exotic small streets full of Middle Est curiosities ,smells, and a lot of people trying to sell something to you. Doru

It is probably impossible to visit any other place on earth with the religious significance that you find here. The three main faiths all cherish this area. Historic buildings co-exist beside cafes and shops in a maze of little cobbled streets.

I stayed in a hostel on the Via Dolorosa, and it is quite remarkable that it sits on the very street that legend has it Jesus walked with his cross. At 04:30 I was awoken by the call to prayer from the Al Aqsa mosque. it really was a fantastic and surreal experience.

The constant pressure by the street vendors and stall holders is rather annoying, and do not even think about handling anything. In their view this represents a willingness to buy the item in question. Their opening prices are always ridiculously high e.g. I was asked for 250 Scheckels (approx £45) for an ordinary white baseball cap. I was told it was Egyptian cotton. I pointed to the label that showed it was made in China. I offered 20 Scheckels and we agreed a price of 30 Scheckels. This is the only reason the Old City does not get 5 stars. Traders really should know that they are likely to get more sales when people feel they can actually browse in shops and look at items without being subjected to intense sales talk. By the end of my time in the Old City I did not even respond to their invites into their shops and simply walked past.

The Old City cannot be bettered for the historic, cultural and religious aspects it provides. A simply wonderful place.

Its impossible to list all of the wonderful sites in the Old City or to compare them with each other. But try not to miss the Night Spectacular at the Tower of David

Take the tour on top of the wall. Visit the holy places, and don't miss the excavations. The tower of DAvid is inside. Look for the fascinating remains of the three ancient walls of the city almost next to each other.
