“A place to wander....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

A stunningly beautiful place, with so much to see.
A place of much history, and a place hugely significant to the spiritual life of so many.
Make sure you have time just to wander, and absorb the amazing atmosphere. There are many important buildings, but there is so much more!
Yes, there are pickpockets (like any major world city!), and there are many people trying to part you from your cash. But haggling over prices is expected, and part of the experience.
The stalls in the market have a fascinating range of goods - look out for the beautifully arranged spices, the comical t-shirts and the lovely olive wood.

“Love the Ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

Thousands of years of history just ooze out of every pore of the old city. The three great religions each hold this tiny piece of real estate sacred and all the merchants coax the faithful and the curious to their shops and eateries as their forefathers did. Be careful about eating in wat look like cheap hole in the wall places near the main religious sites as they can end up being really expensive for what you get.

“Astonishing cultural mix”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

We spent 4 days walking around Jerusalem Old City and loved it. On the first day, we used our map a lot to find entrances to the key places such as the Western Wall, Holy Sepulcre, Dome of the Rock. Once we had a good overview of the Old City, it was great to wander around in the Jewish Quarter, Christian Quarter and Muslim Quarter. After a while, you know the main streets and it's fun to discover stairs, little streets, etc. We were lucky to show up at the Dome of the Rock "ramp" when is was open (easiest way is to go the Western Wall and there is becomes obvious where the entrance to the wooden path is). The opening hours are very precise. Really worth the visit, although a bit sad not to be able to visit the Al Aqsa mosk and Dome of the Rock monument if you are not muslim...
We felt very safe, even in the dark little streets by night. We went to the roofs over the souk (not very easy to find the stairs), very nice in the evening, with children playing and people doing their day to day activities. We had a very nice view of the Wester Wall on some "terraces" in the Jewish Quarter. Finally we managed to get to the St-Jacques church during a mass (open from around 15h to 15h30!), which was instructive (but boring after a half-hour!), but we did not realize that the Armenian compound was inside the cathedral's walls, so we missed it. Next time, because if possible, we will return!

Jerusalem old city is fascinating and I loved all the different quarters. All had their own character, and being secular I was comfortable in not being drawn to one or another
