“An oasis of physical and spritual calm”
Reviewed April 22, 2011

Beautiful old buildings, wonderful location within an easy walk of the Damascus Gate and right next to the American Colony Hotel. Experienced Palestinian staff. Good and plentiful breakfast buffet. Magnificent historic cathedral onsite. Serene, comfortable and secure. Most guests are American Episcopalians or British Anglicans on group tours, but I traveled alone and found plenty of congenial company. I did ask to change rooms after the first night, which was done with a minimum of fuss and no additional charge. I felt fortunate - no, blessed - to be there. The value cannot be beat.

The Guest House is located at a very nice location and ambiance is quite good. However, you truly need to take a good room, otherwise, you could face terrible experience. I needed to change room 4 times! and eventually I had no choice but to change hotels at midnight.
Let me tell you what has happened.
- 1st room (room 28): the shower is out of order. no hot water came. They changed my room to room 27.
- 2nd room (room 27): the shower was ok. So i took it. After that, A/C stopped all of sudden. They quickly repaired (turned the breaker on). But it happened again 15 minutes later. So they changed the room to room 25.
- 3rd room (room 25): the light was not working. The bathroom light was out of order. I was quite concerned about the quality of maintenance of this guest house.
- 4th room (room 38). the room is outside of the main building. bathroom was ok, but no WiFi and the room was filthy. The painting of the wall was falling down. Dirty.

I told the receptionist that I would change the hotels. He said, he did not know why it had happened. I said, simply bad maintenance. He said it could happen at a 5-star hotel. I said no. It could happen once, but not 4 consecutive times. He did no say anything.

What actually bothered me the most was that the receptionist never apologized. I asked him why you do not say sorry: he did not say anything.

Again the hotel is at a very good location, and probably there are good rooms. This is a guest house, and not even a hotel. However, the above experience gave me great doubt about maintenance and hospitality of this guest house.

Please check the room throughly before you decide to stay in this guest house.

Let me tell you what happened to me. I arrived on 22 Dec 2010. They gave me room 28. It was small but looked nice. After visiting the old city, I returned to t

St. George is located just steps from the old city. It used to be a cathjolic convent, and is still run by a catholic church. The building itself is magnificent. Old, but well kep with beautiful courtyard and a garden where one can eat breakfast, have a coffee, and just relax. Rooms are rustic but large and comfortable. If you are coming to Jerusalem and want to experience some culture and step outside of the "chain hotel box" this is a great hotel to stay!

The setting of accommodation in the cathedral setting and around the beautiful courtyard garden is very special. Additionally, both the standard of our room and the breakfast provision had improved substantially since our visit 5 years ago to a very acceptable level; but still keeping the modest pilgrimage atmosphere, and good value for money.
We would always choose to stay there, when visiting Jerusalem

What a pleasant experience. The only fault and a minor one was a slightly pokey bathroom. Quiet , great beds, spotlessly clean and. A fabulous garden/bar/ coffee shop/ breakfast venue. Helpful friendly staff, cheap drinks ( in a cathedral no less) and free fast wireless Internet. Close to the old city and east Jerusalem restaurants .

While I preferred the Golden Walls hotel for it's location right next to the Damascus Gate, this place also had it's good points.
Friendly staff, beautiful building and courtyards (and surprisingly quiet - really nice on a warm evening, with the fragrance of lime flowers). The room I was in (I think all the ground floor rooms are like this but not sure above the second floor) had an amazing cathedral ceiling and while the stone made things echo a bit it was really beautiful.
Shower was broken meaning I had to hold it the whole time but it wasn't really a big deal.Bed was a little uncomfortable.
Very close to the bus stop so traveling was easy.

"Would I recommend this hotel to a friend?" Well, it depends... I wish that "Depends on Circumstances" was an option... If you're new to Jerusalem and you want to punge into discussions about local culture, programs, and politics, yes, this is a good place to start... It's safe. It's friendly. Join the dinner discussions.... Listen and learn from a variety of English-speaking people who know the area... However: If you're looking for comfort, style, and protection from any hint of cultural tension, you should try some of the modern hotels in the area..... Aunt Martha the pilgrim and Cousin Harry the sociologist will like St. George's. Uncle Charlie, who wants "only the best" in personal services, won't like the place. (My opinion? I love St. George's. It's one of my favorite places in Jerusalem. It does a lot of good for a lot of people.)
