This hotel was built by Christian missionaries in the early 20th century and is today in what is politically the West Bank, but in reality part of greater Jerusalem, so it is accessible to all of the city. However, I recommend it to the more adventurous spirits. The building has been updated through the years and while it retains the original feeling and structure, it is a modern, comfortable hotel with modern facilities. The lobby, main dining room, central patio and cave-like lounge are historic places and retain their original ambiance. The hallways are lined with photographs and newspaper clippings of the many historical events at the hotel and in Jerusalem. This to stay in a living historical site.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the rooms facing into the inner courtyard. They are larger, far more historic and...

This place is "chock full" of history and should not disappoint if that is your thing... As for the room, it was spacious and relatively clean, with a "classic" look and windows everywhere. The bathrooms are huge and the tub very comfortable (you can soak for hours). The shower is paradise if you love space and the "rainstorm" type pf showers. You wouldn't know they were going through a drought, here! Room services and all were fine. Breakfast was a nice selection of mostly local dishes, most of it "sans" pork. About the only minus, was the noise at night and the call to prayer (about 4:30 am, at the time of this review). If you sleep with the windows open, which is very nice, you have been warned... Last thing, there is really not a lot nearby, so be prepared to use a cab unless you like to walk. The cabs are pretty "spendy", though...

Room Tip: Upper floors are nice (facing any direction but west), but the elevator is kinda slow.

The American Colony was our elegant oasis while visiting Jerusalem. Within walking distance of the old city it was centrally located to most all of what we wanted to see during our the days in Jerusalem. Large rooms appointed with native area rugs over a tiled floor. Each morning we were greeted with a feast of a buffet breakfast with anything you could imagine on the menu. The dinner service and quality of menu were so good we ate in every night of our our four night stay. The courtyard and surrounding grounds were beautifully landscaped, including the outdoor summer bar where we retired for spirits and wine each evening. Truly one could imagine T.E. Lawrence striding into the lobby as the hotel is a throwback to old world charm. I would return to Israel so as to stay at this beautiful establishment. One final note. As a traveler who loves to swim it had the finest pool I have found in my travels. Well heated for comfort.

Room Tip: Ask for main building but all rooms appear fabulous.

I have stayed in quite a few 'leading hotels' and I can say with all honesty that this one tops them all. It is like staying in the Garden of Eden..literally!
It is not only top notch and beautiful, the staff is the best I have ever met!
Mouayad at the front desk could not have been friendlier, kinder and more helpful. They all were, but he happened to be the one who managed our stay. Wonderful gentleman.
Ahmad, head of housekeeping, what a gem of a fellow. He was on top of everything and always had a big smile and a kind word.
If you can, stay there, it does not get any better. It is easy to understand why they have so many repeat customers.
LOVED IT THERE!
The breakfast, I have never seen such a selection and it was delicious!

We arrived at the hotel after a very long, sweaty and dusty crossing from Jordan over the Allenby Bridge. So this gorgeous, green oasis of an hotel was like a mirage. We had a drink in the Summer Garden as soon as we came, with a nice breeze and great service. The restaurant where they have breakfast has lots of seating in a central courtyard garden which is also beautiful, and actually quite glamorous.

The service was wonderful -- much help from the front desk when we needed it. The hotel has Wifi (free) throughout the entire hotel, which is greatly appreciated.

And our room was amazing -- super high ceilings, beautiful multi colored crown molding, gigantic space.

An amazing treasure in Jerusalem! it starts with a smile and inviting door man warm welcome at front desk from "smiley" Mrs Diana Aho of front office and it's goes to her colleges.
As to the resturant, well, an authentic Arab cousin with world twist and one of the best bakery ever taste.
It is conducted by Mr Sami with attention to the smallest details.
Room was perfectly clean and during the day was checked by the staff.
Atmosphere at the hotel is a combination of old and new of love and care.
Already missing the most wonderful hotel experience we had.
Thank you
