“Fabulous stay.”
Reviewed May 24, 2014 via mobile

I have stayed in many hotels in the World and this one is far above and beyond the rest. The staff is very helpful and make your stay a very pleasant experience. The room was in fantastic order and had all the comforts one could need. The room service was speedy, and the food quality was exceptional. I would absolutely stay again and recommend to anyone traveling to Jerusalem.

The old American Colony has the potential to be a charming boutique hotel but on the basis of this stay it needs to work on a number of things.

The room we had in the old building was pleasant but needs much better sound insulation as the mosque next door has a very loud call to prayer at 5 am. The stairs made the room very unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility and this is a problem throughout the hotel.

The courtyard restaurant is charming but the food is only average, with portions that vary unpredictably from tiny to vast making it very difficult to order a sensible meal. A hotel in this price range should have a good chef - there was little evidence of any talent in the kitchen here. Service is very bad at times - we asked several times for a dessert to be served to one of us who was not having a main course at the same time as a main course to another who did not want dessert. Dessert arrived after the main course and the waiter was rude when we sent it back as no longer wanted. The breakfast buffet is huge but of very patchy quality and again service was virtually non existent.

The cellar bar needs better seating and lighting. It feels dingy though the choice of drinks is good and the prices no more outrageous than elsewhere in Jerusalem.

Finally the hotel has taxis that look like normal jerusalem taxis but charge significantly more. The staff rfused to call us a normal taxi when we asked for one having been quoted about 30% more than the standard taxi fare back to the airport.

Overall could and should do much better as small personal hotels are rare in this city.

Room Tip: As far from the mosque as possible

Dear Sir or Madame,

Thank you for your feedback.

It is true our hotel has stairs leading to some rooms in the Old Wing. The price for authenticity and history is sometimes steep and there is very little we can do about that. We do have rooms which can be reached without stairs and would have preferred it had you mentioned your preference on check-in.

The call to prayer from the mosque is indeed a problem for some, and we advise all light sleepers to ask for a room not facing the mosque. We are constantly trying to improve our sound insulation and will take your feedback on this issue very seriously.

We are sorry you did not find the quality of food and service in our restaurants up to standard. It is somewhat surprising as generally speaking our reviews show most clients are happy but it would appear our standards slipped. Our cellar bar has recently had new lighting and seating so we were most upset to read you found both wanting. We shall investigate and see if your viewpoint is shared by other guests, in which case we will take the necessary action.

Finally, the taxis outside the hotel operate as a franchise and are supposed to operate meters for every journey. Nevertheless you have the absolute right to ask for any taxi company you wish. Although we cannot at this point discover who refused to help you, we have reiterated our instructions to our reception staff to ensure this does not re-occur.

We hope to have answered your points and thank you for the time you took to review us. Now we would ask you to return to be able to show you we have fixed the problems!

We first checked in for one night in King David hotel where everything was just perfect, service, people at reception desk, welcome drink etc, a real palace! Had a beautiful room overlooking the old city. So close for visiting both the old city (you just walk there) and the incredible Israel Museum. Both restaurants were fantastic, great lunch in the garden and wonderfull diner too. Then we checked in American colony and couldn't t believe what we found. Terrible service, unfriendly staff and dirt everywhere. The floor around the swimming pool is littered (Q tips !) the mattresses stained, no one to give us pool towels for 15mns... The room is nice but again terrasse unkept and unswept, dirty table and chairs that stain your clothes. It is charming but really unkept and the service is very poor...

Room Tip: We had a beautiful suite in the ancient part overlooking the nice patio and with a terrace, the only...

Dear Isabelle,

Thank you for your comments.

We are sorry our service was not up to standard. Unfortunately you are not specific about your complaints so we are unable to trace exactly what disappointed you.

I believe you stayed in room 114 overlooking the patio. Indeed one of the chairs on the terrace was dirty and we have replaced it. We also checked all of our pool loungers and found some which had stains on. These would normally be covered by the towels we provide which I understand took too long to arrive. This is wholly unacceptable and we shall try and improve. For a hotel which has consistently received four to five points for cleanliness on Tripadvisor I do find it very surprising that you chose to rate our hotel with only one star, notwithstanding your two negative comments, which were accurate.

Thank you for booking the American Colony Hotel and I hope we are able to improve to such a standard that all reviews are positive.

This is a wonderful oasis in Jerusalem. T E Lawrence stayed here as well as other notables. The rooms are spacious and clean and the service is outstanding. Breakfast was included which was first rate and can be taken in the garden or inside.Probably the best breakfast I had in two weeks in the Middle East. Don't miss the gift shop and bookstore across the street.

Room Tip: not sure there is a bad room

I have stayed here four times so far and it's starting to feel like home away from home.
I visited Jerusalem with three cousins of mine and we had a wonderful experience at this boutique hotel. First of all, the staff recognized me from my previous stays. They were all welcoming and gracious. The breakfast staff, especially the lady who does fresh flat breads with zaatar is always smiling and accommodating. The fourth floor that we stayed on is the floor where Lawrence of Arabia stayed. It felt very special. We had dinner a couple of nights in the bistro and it was cozy and good quality. The gardens are very romantic and well kept.
I love coming back to Jerusalem and staying at the American Colony again and again.

One of the loveliest hotels I've ever visited. It's true, the face-to-face service is not always perfect. But the beautiful building and courtyard, extremely comfy rooms and bathrooms, and fantastic food made up for that. The bar (much but not all of which is smoking) was a great place to unwind at the end of a long day, and made for interesting people watching. It was too cold for the pool, but it seemed clean etc. Overall, a wonderful experience in a charming, Palestinian run hotel in old East Jerusalem.

Room Tip: The rooms around the courtyard are the best but can lack privacy as they open onto a communal space

A stylish old world style hotel - with gorgeous outdoor garden spaces located well away from the maddening crowds of Jerusalem. Lovely rooms - we stayed in the East Wing (annex) instead of the Main Building - and were charmed by the tall ceilings, free-wi-fin and spacious baths. Room decor itself was a bit old- fashioned (not necessarily a bad thing) - but furniture felt a bit too crafty). Front desk staff (and staff in general) were less than ebullient at our arrival - a bit of a turn off that frankly cost them a star in our opinion. Buffet breakfast was first rate - and a real value. We waited quite a bit of time to be served in the charming bar/winecellar - and they DID allow cigar smoking which is a real put off - but the wine/alcohol selection was excellent and the atmosphere was inviting (save the smoke). Pool wasn't open - but you could see how gorgeous it would be in season. The King David would still be our first pick in Jerusalem, but this is a nice, much less expensive (and quieter) alternative.

Room Tip: Ask of a top floor room in the Main Building - you will feel a bit out of place in their annex build...
