I overall enjoyed my stay at the American Colony. The breakfast is poor though, but the food in their outdoor restaurant is very good. The staff who deal with the city tours are rude as well. It is a beautiful hotel though, the garden is very pretty. The sleep quality is very bad as there is a Mosque next door and throughout the night there are calls for prayer. This did give the hotel character but it was very difficult to sleep at night.

My family has been visiting Jerusalem for more than 20 years and this is by far the best experience we have ever had at a hotel in Israel. The American Colony hotel grounds are gorgeous, hidden gardens, quiet spots with beautiful flowers and fragrant trees and the pool is an oasis in this crazy city. The staff has been kind and attentive from the welcoming glass of champagne to the personal service they seem to give every guest. The breakfast in the courtyard garden is delicious with a woman making homemade Bedouin bread and great coffee!! Cannot think of a better way to start a day in Jerusalem. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the old city and a 15 minute walk to downtown and right on the new light rail line. We won't ever stay anywhere else when we visit Jerusalem....best experience.

American colony has been the place that all the VIP stay for years and years. Located in the safe side of east Jerusalem, it is probably a sight for sore eyes, in comparison for the buildings around it: either ruined or new with no vision. The hotel is one big English garden, beautifulllll!
The suits are probably the nicer rooms, but make sure u don't take rooms in the new building. U will miss the whole experience. So be sure to ask for rooms in the old building, And if possible ask for ones facing the lovely lovely pool. The breakfast there has been the talk if the town for years, serves a great variety of goods, and the whole place reeks of politics( mainly small wing) and intellect... The restaurant bar is a famous one and I read great reviews about it but have not found it to be that great but the elegant nicely dressed worldly crowd and the cigar selection is probably an experience by itself..! Ohhhh Jerusalem...

We loved this hotel, its great courtyard. Very well maintained, the rooms are comfy and large, the bathroom sparkling. We stayed in the main complex, so can't speak for the other parts of the hotel. In addition, the location is perfect - just a short walk to the gates of the city of Jerusalem. Overall, a good experience.

I am just now staying in the most charming hotel in the whole Middle East . It is not the first time. I have been a guest here since 1978 and find the American Colony hotel in a better shape than ever. If you stay here you will never forget a breakfast and a dinner in the court yard. The summer bar is a lively place where you can also have a good meal.
I find the straff more than friendly towards oldtimers and newcomers.
The combination of sauna and a cooling down jump in the pool is GREAT !
And If you dig into the history of The American Colony you will find stories you think are invented. But no, they are true.
A stay here is an adventure it itsself.

Room Tip: The suites are just fantastic. Try no 6. or 14 . They are both in the main building. In the Palm Ho...

Staying now in what is supposed to be a LHW hotel (one of only two in israel). This hotel is truly not one. It might have been. It might be again. But now, with unfriendly service, poorly serviced rooms (aunts strolling beneath the carpet) miniature pool towels and disappointing breakfast etc it is not worth the stay or the money. Historical buildings are nice but only as a starting point (and see for comparison the vary good Scottish hotel in Tiberias). Only good pint is the good food quality in the restaurant (killed with inability to get kids menus or even a take away from the pool bar or room service. Shame).

Make no bones about it. This is the place to stay in Jerusalem. Yes, it's absurdly pricey, yes it's a little out of the old city (though its a doodle to get a cab or tram there) trust me this is where you want to be.

Jerusalem is a tense place and if you're on holiday after seeing the sights in this frenetic city you'll want to relax. Which is just what this oasis allows you to do (with the notable exception of the moments the mosque calls to prayer!). The courtyard is a magical place to start your day with breakfast and sets you up for the day beautifully.

As for the cons.. Well the lunches can be very pricey and the basic room aren't special enough.
