We stayed for three nights at the Golden Walls Hotel (formerly known as Pilgrim Hotel) in May 2010. The hotel is located in an Arabic neighbourhood across the street from Damascus gate and adjacent to the Garden Tomb. The location is within very short walking distance to the gates of the old city, which is convenient because traffic in general is a mess in Jerusalem. The restaurant district is 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel, going to and from the hotel we would recommend to cross the road and walk alongside the city walls of the old city.
We had a DBL room with direct access to the roof terrace and views towards the old city, the room was equipped with air-con, flat-screen TV and a comfortable bed. Bathroom was ok sized and appeared to have been refurnished not to long ago. For some the room might be considered a bit worn, but we found it to be ok and cleaning was decent. On the downside the room lacked mini-bar/fridge and in-room safe, however they had a safe in the reception and refreshments could be purchased in the lobby.
Breakfast buffet was good enough and didn’t deviate much from any other hotel breakfast we experienced throughout the Middle East. No omelette chef was seen when we had breakfast and the coffee was crap like most hotel coffee, but that’s only minor details.
All in all we would definitely recommend this hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful.
Another positive thing about the hotel location; just out the main entrance to the right you’ll find the old Arab bus station. This gives you a great opportunity to visit the not so often visited city of Ramallah on the West Bank. Catch Bus 18 to Ramallah (NIS 6,50 for a one way ticket) and jump off at the end station on the busy main street of this lively and friendly Palestinian city. Going back to Jerusalem you should expect some waiting time at the military check point, but foreigners with passport and valid visa to Israel don’t have to leave the bus at the crossing. It might be a good idea to check out the security situation on the West Bank before you leave Jerusalem, haaretz.com should provide you with sufficient information.
