“Exellent choice when visiting Jerusalem”
Reviewed May 21, 2010

We stayed for three nights at the Golden Walls Hotel (formerly known as Pilgrim Hotel) in May 2010. The hotel is located in an Arabic neighbourhood across the street from Damascus gate and adjacent to the Garden Tomb. The location is within very short walking distance to the gates of the old city, which is convenient because traffic in general is a mess in Jerusalem. The restaurant district is 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel, going to and from the hotel we would recommend to cross the road and walk alongside the city walls of the old city.

We had a DBL room with direct access to the roof terrace and views towards the old city, the room was equipped with air-con, flat-screen TV and a comfortable bed. Bathroom was ok sized and appeared to have been refurnished not to long ago. For some the room might be considered a bit worn, but we found it to be ok and cleaning was decent. On the downside the room lacked mini-bar/fridge and in-room safe, however they had a safe in the reception and refreshments could be purchased in the lobby.

Breakfast buffet was good enough and didn’t deviate much from any other hotel breakfast we experienced throughout the Middle East. No omelette chef was seen when we had breakfast and the coffee was crap like most hotel coffee, but that’s only minor details.

All in all we would definitely recommend this hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Another positive thing about the hotel location; just out the main entrance to the right you’ll find the old Arab bus station. This gives you a great opportunity to visit the not so often visited city of Ramallah on the West Bank. Catch Bus 18 to Ramallah (NIS 6,50 for a one way ticket) and jump off at the end station on the busy main street of this lively and friendly Palestinian city. Going back to Jerusalem you should expect some waiting time at the military check point, but foreigners with passport and valid visa to Israel don’t have to leave the bus at the crossing. It might be a good idea to check out the security situation on the West Bank before you leave Jerusalem, haaretz.com should provide you with sufficient information.

We found this well-priced hotel at the last minute. We did need to haul our luggage upstairs to the lobby, but were greeted with welcomed cold drinks. The room was very spacious and just updated. Blue brocade drapes, understated art and creamy white walls gave it an elegant feeling and the bathroom was also spacious and remodeled. The bed and breakfast were fine and the staff helpful. I wish there had been a fridge and wifi in the room. Those two inconveniences mared an otherwise lovely one-night stay as we depend on both of them a lot while traveling.

My wife and I spend 5 nights at the Golden Walls in March, 2010. The hotel was clean and comfortable but there is nothing that really distinguishes it except for an exceptional location, just opposite the Old City walls between the Damascus and Herod gates. A mere 3-minute walk puts you inside the most interesting part of the Old City, making this hotel a perfect base for exploration. There is also a small parking lot behind the hotel where management allowed us to park a rental car, although most of the guests here seemed to be members of the large tourist group so ubiquitous in Jerusalem. The staff was friendly and accomodating without exception.
PS ... If you do stay here, request room # 302 which has a sliding glass door that opens onto a rooftop terrace overlooking the Old City walls.

I can't say more about the location. You can't find a better locaton for any other hotels. The staff are just wonderful. They answered all our questions and showed us things to do and how to do. The room is not excellent, but good. Who will stay in the room for long anyway in Jerusalem.

The hotel is situated near the Damascus gate of the Jerusalem old city. The main sights are within walking range and the other sights around Jerusalem are easy to reach with public transportation or one of the many tours. There is a bus station almost next to the hotel.

From the outside the hotel looked ok, but once inside quality is definitely very good. The lobby and rooms are well furnished and everything is generally clean. The hotel has a very nice roof terrace which overlooks the old city of Jerusalem. WIFI is free, but only available in the lobby. Service is also very good. When we missed breakfast one morning the staff made a special breakfast just for us. When ever we had questions about where to go or how to get there, staff members were always friendly in answering.

Although the beds were good, we were always wakened very early by a nearby mosque. Of-course this is a part of the Muslim inhabitants culture.

Al together Tulip Inn Jerusalem is definitely a very good hotel where you get very good quality for a good price.

Fantastic service, very cheap international call rates. Very clean. Bar is a little expensive but much like all hotels and even in the Muslim Quarter of Al Quds it's not hard to find places that you can get a cheap beer.

Bathroom was a little small and you'd definitely want a double room if there's was more than one of you staying but when you're right next to the Old City why on earth would you stay in the room. Same goes for the not great TV - with all there is to see and do in the city if you're watching TV you're doing something very wrong

Damascus Gate right nearby for great shopping and there's a street falafel guy a few steps away where you can gorge for around 3 shekels. In fact try to street eat as much as possible - cheap as chips and tasty too.

Also for the non smokers out there the Golden Walls seems to be the only hotel in the middle east which doesn't provide ashtrays as standard.

Stayed here four nites during a pilgrimage to Eygpt, Israel. Included breakfast and dinner buffets. Food was good albeit a bit monotnous. Saturday night they had the Sultan's feast which included some entertainment. A bit of irony since we were with a Christian group in the Palestinian area - ha.

The staff was friendly and accommodating.
The hotel had a single internet terminal for free use of patrons. That was a nice feature. I don't think there was free wireless for those with laptops.
There were a number of street markets in the area.
After dark the area seemed a bit sketchy but no one in our group had any problems.
