“Interesting”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

Take a taxi to Mea Shearim, which is located on the outside of the old city. Not a very nice area, and I was spoken to harshly by a woman because I had the lower part of my arm showing but I was wearing trousers so that was good. Did take some photos but the people don't like this much, interesting cultural experience never the less.

“A facinating way of life, but not worth the hassle to view it.”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

I have friends who live in Mea Shearim, and am there at least once a month, when I'm in Israel (most of the year, except the summer, when I'm in Ireland). It is interesting, facinating, but still a slum with usually, at least one crazy harassing tourists or anyone deemed not sufficiently 'modest' in their dress. I took my brother, his wife, son and two daughters once, before Passover, years ago. The men all wore long trousers, buttoned shirts, and skullcaps; the women all wore mid-calf skirts, and blouses which were modest by any but the most fanatical; and we were shopping before the Feast for stuff available there; we got verbally attacked by one strange young man, who kept ordering us to leave the neighbourhood. He was not willing for men and women to walk in the same group through the area. Nothing has changed.
If you do want to go there, the sexes should be segregated (ie., men in a group by themselves; women in a group by themselves); clothing should be as modest as that described above - at least mid-calf length skirts (preferably longer, and NOT tight fitting), a collared blouse and sleeves at least down below the elbows; no bare midriff of course. For men, long trousers, and a shirt. No tank tops, shorts, bare skin other than forearms. Enjoy!
