“Unusual and outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

It is hard to add to the descriptions of other reviewers since they have captured the uniqueness of the food in this Kurdish/Jewish restaurant. The inside of the restaurant is very small and totally unadorned. One would never guess that it was the site of one of the best lunches one will ever have. The food is unusual, varied, and uniformly excellent. The service is also excellent. Ideally you go with a couple of other people to sample and savor multiple dishes.

Anyone who cares about food and is adventurous ought to enjoy this restaurant and experience. We wish we could go back but unfortunately discovered it on our last day in Jerusalem.

“Shuk bites tasting tour was great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2013

What a terrific way to tour the market! We went a bit early, so had to wait for some of the places to open, but we enjoyed each and very vendor. Everyone was very nice and explained their products to us. At the cheese stop, I recommend asking for the local cheese --they have an amazing global selection, but we can get that in NY. They were happy to oblige. They only thing missing on the tour was the wonderful Halva stand -- the proprietor was more than happy to offer tastes of everything in any case! It was our first Halva and, as we later found, the best... Could use a bit better marking for the non-Hebrew reader, but finding the vendors was part of the fun!

“Tip No.1: if locals stand in line – join them !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2013

Slow-food fresh (never frozen) authentic Iraqi & Kurdish meals.
Although located in a hidden place inside the open market = worth to stand in line (runs fast) to have a seat

Tip No.2: if you are more than one – each of you will ask for another dish (be early to have all 3 kinds of stuffed) and exchange on table to taste all kinds.
It's running for many years by a family and their well-known secret is: never change or modify any traditional Recipes!

Tip No.3: visit this Machane-Yehuda market morning, make your lunch at Azura and cont. your visit to this endless bazar

“Kurdish Meatball Awesomeness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

Most memorable food in years. Family run canteen in Mahane Yehuda serving exquisite slow-cooked Iraqi/Turkish/Kurdish Jewish meals. Lunch only- they start running out of stuff about 2:30pm and are pretty much done by 430-5. I am still thinking about the aubergine stuffed with some kind of cinnamon beef and pine nuts, dumpling soup, wonderfully fragrant meatballs, and the only hummus i've ever been excited about. Service is brusque and super quick, as the pots of good stuff have been stewing all morning and just need to be ladled out.
A bit hard to find in the laneways - look for the greasy spoon style awning and young soldiers and business people dining alfresco amidst dozens of old guys at the next door social club yelling at each other while playing backgammon.
