“Great little place”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

Clean, well kept, and really convenient for the Damascus Gate. Staff ready to let you in at all hours of the night (I wouldn't push this - it's just the Israeli security finally let us out of the airport at 2am).

Really enjoyed staying here - quiet and great value. Not a luxury place - but totally worth it for backpackers or budget travellers. Clean sheets and towels changed daily.

Breakfast, as many people have noted, is a little sparse, but it's so hot I never really felt like eating much anyway. Also, they don't tend to keep staff down there, so sometimes when they run out of water/milk you're a bit stuck. Still, grab a coffee from outside! This place is excellent value and the staff friendly and helpful.

I have to say up front that the reception staff were great. The hotel seemed to have a lot of religious since it was connected to/run by the Syrian Catholic Church. The room was simple and the bathroom was very small and awkward to move around in at times. But must add that it was advertised as having a restaurant It does not except when it makes special arrangements for a group. The location is not bad...close to the Garden Tomb and the Damascus Gate. Breakfast was okay and the AC worked great. So while not inexpensive or super comfy, the location in East Jerusalem was a plus. Have to also say that it was difficult to find....it is almost in an alley behind a high wall.

Room Tip: Our room was a triple but not that big.

The guest house is run by the Syrian Catholic Church.
The staff of the house was very friendly. The location is great, the Old City is just a short walk.
The rooms are simple but clean. The breakfast was the same every morning but the selection was good enough in this price range.
Highly recommended.

St. Thomas home is a Syrian Catholic guest house in East Jerusalem, just 5 minute walk from Damascus Gate and from two bus stations. As other people noticed, it is not very easy to find, but if you walk along Nablus road, pass the bus station and check on your left: after a restaurant, you will see a narrow road with a sign indicating the guest house.

Our room was pretty basic, with three single beds (no double beds are available). The bathroom was tiny, but clean. No shampoo provided, so bring yours.

The area is very quiet, despite being in a very lively part of the city. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

WiFi was available for free and the download speed was ok.

In short, You must be aware in advance that this is a guest house and not a standard hotel. If you don't mind, then it is a great choice to visit the Old City of Jerusalem.

I stayed in St Thomas's as part of a Christian pilgrimage group and had a wonderful time. Other reviews describe the problem of finding it (not least because the Google map I had was grossly inaccurate) but once you do so, you are in a very peaceful location just five minutes walk from the Damascus Gate. It is not meant to be a western tourist hotel - it is a simple shelter for pilgrims, but that said, it is perfectly adequate for a short stay and a very good price. Its strongest advantage is the lovely staff group. If you take time to chat with them, it will more than repay you. Spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, adequate Palestinian-style breakfast, good wifi. Great.

Wanting to make a short over-night visit to Jerusalem from Jordan we found and booked the St Thomas Home on-line the evening before crossing border at King Hussein Bridge. The cost of accommodation in and around the Old City is rather high, and at £75 ($120) for a twin room this was about the cheapest we found on the main websites (Thanks to previous reviewers also)
Yes it's not the easiest place to find but at Damascus Gate take the small road opposite (Nablus St) passing Garden Tomb (on right) and continue until you reach French Dominican monastery (also on right) turn and look across street and you should see the alleyway down which you will find St.Thomas on the right.

The room was fairly basic but more than acceptable, and our room didn't have a TV not that that was an issue for us. Our room (105) had a reasonably generous window with a view of the hill overlooking the old city. However as is common in this part of the world it had a fly-screen over it so not too good for taking photos (Wasn't aware of the roof top terrace until reading previous reviews again on my return) The breakfast buffet had a reasonably good selection of the usual regional foods offered at breakfast and is served in basement dining room. The lift is as previously described small ( the smallest I have ever used)

The enclosed courtyard in front of building is relatively small but a pleasant place to relax after a day walking the old city. If like me you enjoy a cold beer after a long day it was a bonus to discover that they keep some bottles of beer in a fridge in reception along with bottled water we had originally asked for !

Can't think of anything to fault St. Thomas on and for the one night was more than adequate and after a morning of more sightseeing we crossed back into Jordan. Anyone interested in the crossing at King Hussein Bridge feel free to contact me, I know I was apprehensive about crossing both ways but it worked OK although we learnt some things the hard way.

I have visited Jerusalem over a dozen times over the last few years. Usually it is for academic research or business, sometimes for family travel (I have three kids). This is always my first choice for a place to stay. The people are super friendly, you might be able to chat with the bishop at breakfast, it is quiet and peaceful and very clean, you always have hot water, the breakfast is simple but satisfying, and the beds are comfy.

As for location it is close to the Damascus Gate as well as the tram station. Also, if you want to take the bus to Bethlehem it is right down the road.

Jerusalem is an expensive town, and this place is affordable.

Finally, Christians will enjoy the fact that the church is part of the structure, so you have access to it at any time.

Other nice things: great internet access, and now you can pay with credit card. There are not televisions in the rooms. Maybe you don't like that, but really--who comes to Jerusalem to watch TV?

If I had one wish? A proper coffee maker for breakfast. Until then, enjoy the Nescafe :-) But by all means, stay here, I am picky when it comes to hotels and guest houses, but this place has captured the heart of this international traveler who spends time in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
