“Good food, large portions”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2014

We arrived in Jerusalem on a Friday and it was Valentine’s Day. Not good for a tourist looking for something to eat. Our hotel’s reception gave us several recommendations and called to make us a reservation at Café Smadar. Since many restaurants were closed for the Sabbath, we took the recommendation. Everything could not have been better. With my cauliflower appetizer, husband’s soup, two mains, two beers and a coke is was about $65 USD. Our food was good and the portions large. They took credit cards. It was a casual place and got very busy before we left. We had a GPS and had no problem finding this small restaurant with a cinema. There was street parking available.

“A great local spot and open on Shabbat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

We live just down the street from Cafe Smadar but didn't realize for quite awhile that this cafe was also a film house because it is an such an inconspicuous location. The setting of the cafe is pretty basic and the tables are close together, but the food is great and has some nice non-kosher options on the menu. We took another reviewer's recommendation and tried the roasted cauliflower with tahini and it was delicious! We saw a film after dinner and loved the feel of an older, classic filmhouse, including the red curtain drawn across the screen. It is open on Shabbat and makes for a great destination in this part of town - looking forward to going back!

“One of the most special places!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

A wonderful restaurant-cafe. Being one of Jerusalem's 'institutions', it is a very special and charismatic place. If you want to feel the real Jerusalem young vibe - this place is for you.
The food is delicious and the portions are big. Must try the Cauliflower with Tahini and the sweet hot pie for the desert.

“A Nice Down-to Earth Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

A great place to hang out and "shmooze"...nice people, good service, good food. While you're at it take in a film at Israel's most famous old-time style film house. You may meet a few artists. Soup is good in the winter months. Not officially "kosher", but food seems to be.

“The only place open on Saturday in the German Colony...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013

Nice breakfast, easygoing. You can enjoy the experience even more if you watch a movie in Smadar cinema located there. The only thing we didnt like was the bread they served with the meal - didnt quite go with the eggs-salad concept...
