“I love to sit at the bar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2012

Smadar is a friendly neighborhood bar/bistro with an old fashioned kind of friendliness. I often stop by on my way home from work for a glass of wine or a beer--sit at the bar, reading the paper or a book from the second-hand book shelves they have. The barmen are always friendly and willing to chat or discuss the latest film. Very pleasant interior design. A good place to go.

“Dinner and a Movie in the Same Place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2012

We visited Smadar recently and it was one of the highlights of our trip! The restaurant is a casual cafe/bistro, with excellent food - salads, etc. We had an eggplant sandwich and butternut squash soup, and like most Israeli restaurants there was too, too much (outstanding) food! The highlight of the evening was the movie theater that was located within the restaurant! We had bought tix in advance. We are Americans and had to check beforehand to see if there would be English subtitles, which there were. So, after dinner, we ambled behind a curtain and were led into a beautiful, large, modern theater. What fun! We felt like natives that night. Smadar has quite a history. It was the first theater in Israel to show a silent film in Israel. The daughters of the owner wanted to sell it when he died, but a protest arose and the city ruled that it could not be demolished. So - Jerusalem still has this fantastic treasure! You gotta go...
