We ate there on a Saturday evening. The food was plentiful, hot and delicious. The staff friendly, accomodating and welcoming. It isn't cheap so is more exclusive and being a Saturday evening we were able to gat a table. It was cold (a cold January evening) but this did not detract from the meal which our party of 6 all enjoyed.

Well done Alma !

On a cold night, after walking all day, we stumbled on this nice restaurant by chance when we decided not to go to another one near by where everybody was smoking those glass things.
Our meals were excelent, the only surprise was that the "specials of the day" (neck of lamb) was substantially more expensive than other food on the menu.
Will we go there again when we return to Jerusalem? yes but will take more care with the cost of the food.

You don't find a restaurant in Jerusalem where the owners/staff are really NICE and go out of their way to please- especially if you are a foreigner

This place is a find - food is very interesting and excellent - and they go out of their way to explain the specials...

Small menu but great balance between meat, fish and vegetarian

Beware though - portions are HUGE!!! The Schnitzel can feed an army!!

In Jerusalem’s downtown area, nestled quietly amongst the area’s more conspicuous bars, we happily discovered Alma, a classy Israeli restaurant with distinctly Middle-Eastern flair.

Although inconspicuous from the street, once inside it became obvious that the building is historic: with ceilings lined with dark wooden beams; and small bricked alcoves inserted into the stone walls; and the fine dining atmosphere noticeably contrasting with the bustle of the pedestrian walkway in the street outside.

Although we had not booked and the place was packed, we were warmly welcomed and invited to take a seat on the sofas just inside the entrance to wait for a table to become available. We ordered a delicious cabernet sauvignon from the extensive Israeli wine menu.

It was worth the wait, we started with the wonderful house bread and, having had a long and tiring day, we then put ourselves safely into the hands of the attentive staff who did not let us down. Amongst the delicious array of tantalizing dishes which included salads and grilled chicken wings, came a memorable beef stew cooked to perfection in a clay pot and served with couscous. To say it was delicious is an understatement.

All in all this was a warm, cosy, inviting, classy yet still rustic Israeli dining experience.

The atmosphere of the enclosed square where Alma resides is lovely; the cool evening air sitting outside pleasant; even the stray cats add a touch. The main course, leg of lamb arrived and was virtually all fat save for two small pieces (one for each of us) When we brought this to the attention of the waitress, she seemed to acknowledge it and nothing more. We were left hanging. I actually gave the pieces of fat to the stray cats......... I expected the proprietor to come out and apologize, to offer another course, or a desert; in some way to keep a customer happy, but no. In the end this compromised our experience. Too bad.
