“Ring the bell and go back a few centuries”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2013

Walk through the Old City, along the Via Delarosa, and you come to an iron gate with a bell. Ring the bell, the gate opens, and you see the shields of the Slavic countries at the entrance to the Austrian Hospice. Coffee, pastry, juices and a view from the terrace that hasn't changed in centuries. The food is good (and authentic if you miss your German-Austrian snacks), the prices are reasonable and you can feel like you are stepping back even deeper into the history that is Jerusalem. Even after 10 trips to the Old City, I had no idea this place existed (thanks to the David Citadel for the suggestion). Well worth the exploring. And they do a great "kaffe kar" (iced coffee, American style)

“Great views over the old city”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2013

In the first place you have to go to this place to enjoy the lovely garden and the fantastic view from the rooftop on the old city. I was there at sunset when the muezzins of the surrounding minarets called for prayer. It was very special.
Besides that you can eat typical Austrian food and desserts like Apfel Strudel, a bit strange in the middle of Jerusalem :-) My schnitzel with potato salad was basic, but good and something different after a few days of local food. Not expensive at all.

“Vienna in Jerusalem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

On a sunny December morning I traveled to Jerusalem with four friends. We visited the old city's market, and had a coffee break at the Austrian Hospice. Long time ago, it used to be a pilgrims lodge and hospital. Today it's a small hotel and a charming cafe with a lovely garden. The special of the house is the "Apple Schtrudel" pastry, with whipped cream- just like in Vienna. Try to get a table in the garden. As a bonus, you can go to the roof and see Jerusalem from a different angle.

“Out of place...in a good way. Be sure to visit the roof!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Old Jerusalem is a wonderfully varied city to explore, but the presence of this hospice is nevertheless a little surreal! Escape the bustling narrow streets by ringing the doorbell and stepping into a very different environment. Even though the day was warm, we couldn't resist the homemade apple cider and apple strudel, as per our friend's recommendation, and then took in the view from the rooftop (see photo). The interior of the building is cool and calm - a great place to recharge your batteries for a while before heading back into city...

“An island of Autrian land in the middle of the orient”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

Surprising reminiscence of the colonial time when each of the major empires had established their our teritory in Jerualem. An island of Autria in the middle of the middle of the oriental jerusalem.A nice atmosphere coffee house with Shtrudel and similat treats and a nice view on jerusalem from the roof. Probably also a nice place to stay for pilgrims of all sorts.
