This is a wonderful restaurant. The setting and the food are magnificent. I had to return to sample the beef carpaccio again and then again. Definitely a favorite for me.

Four of us went to Scala last nite. tt was recommended as the "hot new restaurant", a must. Located in the David Citadel, it was comparable to any of the new restaurants in the United States - minimalist, soothing. Music "oldies" like Jackson Browne and James Taylor in the background. Zebra wood tables. Lighting and screens creating ambiance and the feeling of privacy. So it felt comfortable.

The food was okay. Started with potatoe gnocci. The dish lacked flavor. Moved on the the Entricote which was cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were runny like gravy. The dsh came with the bone so you could eat the marrow.

The deserts were not inspiring. The chocolate cake desert offered was sour. Interesting that the waiter asked how it was as I had just taken a bite and was looking for something to drink the taste away. I mentioned that it was definitely not good. He nodded his head and moved on.

The bill - 950 NIS about $275 for 4 that included 4 appetizers, 4 main (2 of my guests had the chicken breast and said it was dry as a bone, 1/2 bottle of wine, and 2 desserts.

We asked to be validated for parking in the hotel and were referred to the front desk who said no. Add on $10 for parking. We had great conversation in a great enviornment. The food was not the star.

We went to Scala for my birthday dinner, having made the choice after having read a review of the restaurant in a local paper, and hearing also from friends.Since we live in Jerusalem and are familiar with its restaurants we wanted something very special, and this was a wonderful choice.
The decor is very elegant and minimalist in the best style of the Italian designer, Piero Lissoni. The only drawback is the the restaurant has no view at all of the city, but the designer compensated by visually enclosing the space to make the visitor feel as if inside a beautiful bubble.
The tables are uncovered, made of dark wood, and the decorations are also minimal, but not spare. Lovely.
The food was excellent, from beginning to end. There were 3 complimentary dishes added to the order (I think because they had been told in advance that it was a birthday dinner), including an inventive amuse gueule, a sorbet between courses and a"pre-dessert" dessert.
There was a good selection of wines.
The only thing that needed some improvement was the quality of the service. Though there was nothing wrong with it, the people who were chosen to waitress were not up to the standard of the restaurant. They are very young, and haven't been trained to a high enough professional standard. Since they heard us speak English, they tried to speak English in return, but really didn't know it well enough to be completely. It is a shame, since there are many English speaking tourists who would frequent this type of restaurant.
Despite that, the overall experience was very, very positive and I would definitely return for a special occasion, since it is an expensive restaurant.
