Strand seems to be a place targeted towards tending organized tour groups like the one we were in.
The hotel is reasonably clean, the finish looks sometimes more like someone's private flat than a hotel - especially the bathroom, which were slightly too rough for my taste. There's a problem with noise - you can hear what the people in your neighboring rooms are talking about as the noise comes both through the doors, the walls and probably ventilation, too. It wasn't hard since we were neighbored by rather quiet company, but I don't want to think what would it be were it some louder lads or gals.
Food is good, Arabian-style. You can get a nice city map from the reception which lets you see the city on your own - especially useful in the Old City until you get to know its narrow and convoluted alleyways (will take several visits to learn properly).
There's a useful food (and water!) shop down the street, some 500 meters to the north, past the YWCA and used cars lot.
