“Best Little Hostel in Jerusalem!”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

I found the The Jerusalem Hostel, during an extended stay in Israel, after a fabulous 18 day tour. What a surprise! The building itself has historic significance, and was originally a top-class hotel. Well kept & maintained, the rooms are clean and in the dorms, space-efficient. Kitchen, laundry, wi-fi, all part of the package. The staff is courteous and professional, while keeping a great sense of humor, which I greatly appreciated. EZ access to everything J'sam offers! Thumbs UP! :)

Room Tip: Couples & families should book private rooms. Singles & backpackers are quite happy in the...

The location is the main advantage of this place, just a 10 minute walk to the old city and right next to a tram stop. There are loads of cafes, restaurants and bars right outside the door. But this being so it gets VERY noisy at night which would be a problem for light sleepers (though on Shabbat it is dead quiet). The price is quite expensive for what you get, as has been said before the place is a little run down, only a fan in the room, and the breakfast is pretty much non-existant (a loaf of bread left in the communal kitchen). But if you're only staying a couple of nights this place is a perfect base for sightseeing.

Room Tip: Get a room not facing the street if you want to get some sleep!

I stayed there in May 2012. The main advantage of this place is location - within walking distance to the Old City and just few steps away from the nightlife of West Jerusalem, and you’ve also got buses going to Tel Aviv just around the corner. I moved here from the hostel in the Old City an must tell you the Jerusalem Hostel was a much better choice. It is a hostel not a hotel, so you must be prepared for less luxury. Indeed, the place is run down and needs some work. It is smelly and dirty and for this reason I did not dare to try their breakfasts. I also used my sleeping bag and not their sheets. The room we got was rather spacious. Bathroom size was ok, shower worked ok – there is warning that the hot water is only available within certain hours but it was on all the time. We asked for a more quiet room and were able to get a good night sleep (certainly I would not recommend the room with the balconies as there are pubs around and much noise at night). The staff was nice and helpful (they are not around during Shabbat, which is understandable). Considering the prices of lodging in Jerusalem, their prices are OK but they could work on their quality.

Room Tip: Do not take the rooms with the balcony, ask for the quiet rooms at the back.

Reasonable price for double roomwith private bathroom
Location- it is close to the tram station. Just two stop for damascus gate and 10-15 minutes for jaffa gate by foot. Center of jaffa road. ATM 24hrs supermarket, icecream shop Aldo, a lot of restaurants are very near.
Very small but clean room
Free wifi

Very small bathroom
A little noisy even at night and early inthe morning
No lift. I had to walk up 2 flights with my heavy luggage.
Brakfast is very basic.
Above all, very very very weak hot shower. In the morning we hardly got hot water at all.

Overall
Although price and location is nice,
I cannot suggest this hostel.
Without hot water, private bathroom is meaningless!
If Your matter is only budget and never care about anything else, yeah it is for you!

Room Tip: I made a reservation jerusalem hostel, however they gave me a room of little hotel jerusalem. Maybe...

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your feedback and kind words you wrote as plus us in our hostel:)
You are right, we don't have a lift in the hostel. The reason is that this is a historic building (it was the first hotel in Jerusalem and was built in the 19th century), that by law has to be preserved and no life can be built there.

I would like to inform you that breakfast now has been upgraded - it includes coffee, tea, bread, butter, jam, chocolate spread, dates spread, peanut butter, olives, cheese and humus. We also provide our guests with a valuable discount voucher for a full breakfast in a lovely coffee house a minute away from the hostel (this coffee house's breakfast was chosen by lonely planet to be one of 10 best breakfast in the world), and our breakfast volunteer will be happy to cook eggs make fresh juice for you for a small amount of money.

Regarding hot water - as I wrote, this is an historic building, so even though there are 24 hours hot water, the pumps that deliver them quickly to the rooms work only from 8AM-12 PM and from 16-midnight. You can still enjoy hot water even when the pumps are not working, you just need to wait long enough until they come. Moreover, we have shared shower located next to the boilers, where you can quickly get hot water 24 hours a day.

Regarding the noise - we are located in the very heart of the city center, where everything happens:) whenever guests ask to move to a quieter room, we do every effort to change room for them, but we can not stop the noise from the most central place in Jerusalem:)

We hope to see you again in the future! :)

This hostel provides a very central location with easy access and walking distance to central Jerusalem. The same owner also has the Old Jaffa Hostel in Tel Aviv and the level is pretty much the same. Cheap lodging that works well unless you plan to spend a lot of time at the hostel. The room was spacious but not as clean as it could, but worked all right. The service at the reception was very helpful and friendly, which made the stay very enjoyable. We got good advice from the receptionists regarding all typical tourist questions and needs. The breakfast was not fabulous and some work could be done on the facilities, but works well for a less demanding and more adventurous traveller.. :) Will stay here next time as well due to the friendly service and value for money.

The location is great in the city center just a short walk from the old city. It was certainly budget. Staff was generally unavailable and not terribly helpful. Rooms were shabby with limited linens. Warm water only available during select times(not until 07:00 am!). Breakfast was a joke-- basically a loaf of bread you toast yourself in a chaotic and tiny communal kitchen. We had no place to sit and had to clean our own dishes, and it wasn't available until 8:15! The communal areas left much to be desired. Very small! But it served our purposes fine because of price and location. All in all, I've stayed in much nicer hostels but it works.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your time writing a review for us. I would like to inform you of a few changes that will make your stay with us more enjoyable if you will come and stay with us again:) -
1. Breakfast has been upgraded - it now includes coffee, tea, bread, butter, jam, peanut butter, chocolate spread, dates spread, cheese, humus and olives. We also provide our guests with a valuable discount voucher for enjoying a full breakfast in a lovely coffeehouse just a minute a way from the hostel (this coffee house's breakfast was chosen by lonely planet to be one of the 10 best breakfast in the world), and our breakfast's volunteer will be happy to cook eggs for you or make a fresh juice for a small amount of money.
2. breakfast today is served no later than 8:00 AM, and most days our early waker volunteer (Keith) serves it already at 7:30 am.
3. Our hostel is located in an historic building, that was the first hotel in Jerusalem. Although there are hot water 24 hours a day, there are pumps that deliver the hot water to the rooms, which work from 8:00 to 12:00 pm and then from 16:00 to midnight. Even though, if you will turn on the tap and wait, you will get hot water 24 hours a day. And if you don't wish to wait, we have shared shower located next to the boilers where you can enjoy 24 hours quick hot water coming. you just need to come and ask the receptionist where it is and we will be happy to help you.

We will be happy to see you again in the future! :)

This hostel is located in a prime spot 10 minute walk from the old city , 10 minutes from Muchanai Yehuda Market, opposite King George Street, and Nachlat Sheva. Shopping tourism and food and coffee seconds away. Take a room not a dorm if quality sleep is important because of the snores and bunk bed tremors. There is a kitchen. Breakfast is coffee and a couple cookies. The showers aren't very good but adequate. There can be a lot of noise at night from the main street (pedestrians) and from the taxi stand adjacent. Ear plugs are advisable. Internet and free computers. Great staff. Despite the minuses, we love this place and come back time after time. I recommend it

Room Tip: The porches are fun to sit on , have a drink , and watch the pedestrians
