“Kosher French Cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

Inside Herod's Vitalis Spa, Lawrence is a quiet, upscale Kosher French restaurant. I liked the asperagus appetizer, although the sauce was quite lemony. The lamb chops were very tasty and the quality of the meat and of the beef was higher than we've tasted in Israel. The meat was incredibly tender. We both loved our desserts. I had the chocolate souffle and my husband had the pieapple cigars with fruit salad. The only thing that bothered us, was the noisey refrigerator holding the buffet style appetizers. It was a most pleasant night out. The service was excellent!

“Loved the atmosphere, loved the food, love the restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

The Lawrence is on the second floor of Herod's Vitalis, the spa hotel that is part of Herod's hotel. We went there the first night we were staying in the hotel and it was so good that we went back again the second and third nights as well!

In addition to the appetizers and main course, which are served to the table, salads and similar dishes aare set out buffet style and are well worth trying, though we found we couldn't eat too much of them - the portions were filling as it was. For appetizers we tried the Mediterranean Salad, the Hot and Cold Goose Liver, the Buri fish and the beef carpaccio. All were excellent, particularly the liver and the fish.

For mains we tried two types of lamb, which were delicious - not always the case in Israel, but done perfectly here. We also tried beef, which was very good, and a duck and chicken dish which I loved, infused with mushroom in some way. The desserts were also surprisingly good for a kosher meat restaurant (in which no dairy products can be used) - especially the chocolate souffle and the sorbet. There was a dragonfruit sorbet which was better than any dragonfruit we had ever tasted.

The staff were lovely, which added to the experience. Nurit, our waitress, and Hamoudi, the chef, were especially nice to us and all in all it was everything we looked for in a restaurant. The one problem we had - wine that arrived late in the meal - was dealt with apologetically and gracefully.

Friday nights are different in this restaurant, as it is kosher and therefore has different rules for the Sabbath. Usually this means that the food is a little less good than usual, but in this case, it just wasn't true. In fact it was almost as if they were making a special effort because the circumstances were a little different. Instead of ordering everything, as you would normally do, there were salads and starters of all kinds laid out buffet style, and also soup which you could take, and various fish and meat dishes, some hot, some cold. The cold included beef carpaccio and great goose liver as well as more traditional Sabbath options like gefilte fish and chopped chicken liver. You could then choose to order a main course if you wanted to, out of some very good options (the lamb with artichoke mash was delicious) or just eat the various dishes available on the side. Dessert was then served buffet style in the little lounge outside the restaurant.

This is our favourite restaurant in Eilat so far, and we've tried a number of them now. The peaceful, almost romantic atmosphere, the wonderful food and the friendly service add up to a great dining experience.

If you're staying in Herod Vitalis, (and certainly if you're not!) make sure to book ahead. If you're staying in the hotel, perhaps try to book even before you get there and check in. It's sometimes quite busy!

“Gourmet restaurant at a reasonable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2012

The Lawrence is a kosher meat restaurant located inside a hotel. It used to be a dairy restaurant, but that is no longer the case. The restaurant is not easy to find, even once you're inside the hotel!
Dinner costs NIS220 per person. You choose an appetizer, main course and dessert. While waiting, instead of filling up on bread, you go to the buffet counter and choose meat, fish and vegetable delicacies.I highly recommended the cold, thinly-sliced roast beef. The servers suggest you do so again between courses.
Drinks are extra, but our server was happy to bring me ice-cold tap water at my request.
The restaurant has a romantic, quiet atmosphere, undisturbed by small children or even cell-phones.

For appetizers I ordered the hot and cold livers, and my wife had the asparagus on a bed of mixed cooked vegetable, strong on the eggplant. Our main courses were beef medallions and lamb chops, much bigger, more tender and juicier than normally served in this country. Excellent.

Everyone except us was served their main courses promptly. Ours took way too long, almost 30 minutes. In retrospect, I should have said something to our server after 10 minutes, but we were enjoying the atmosphere and the side dishes from the buffet so much that I simply neglected to do so. The staff, to their credit, was apologetic.
The restaurant is open from 20:00 to 22:30 and reservations are a good idea.

The deserts were good, but I have a feeling we would have been far more appreciative of them if we hadn't been so full.

All in all, a great culinary experience.
