“Terrific hike - some challenging bits”
Reviewed January 22, 2013

20 minutes by car west of Eilat on Highway 12. Went there on a very cold and windy day just after rains in the area. So saw some fresh vegetation which is rare in such barren desert terrain. There are two short difficult parts - one a short descent holding on to two parallel metals rails, and the other a rock face descent using metal rungs hammered into the rock face. We didn't take the one-hour return route but continued onwards for another hour and half before climbing a steep cliff to return to our starting point at the car park. A family hike (either the shorter or longer version) except for little children. Did it with 8 friends and we're all over 60.

“Great hike in serene solitude (almost)”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

20 kms north of Eilat along Highway 12 you branch off to the right and continue 1½ kms along a dirt road to a parking area.
The main trail towards Red Canyon is marked with green markers, but we will recommend that you also hike the northern loop marked with black. To do this, walk along the dirt road another ½ km north. Then the black route branches off to the right (east) and eventually turns south to join the green main trail just before the entrance to the canyon.
In the canyon you have to scramble a bit and descend narrow passages supported by hand rails. At the end of the 250 metres long canyon you have the option (recommendable) of following an alternative upper route (also marked with black) above the canyon. But do not turn around immediately. The yellow rocks around the next bends are very beautiful.
Approaching the parking area there is also an alternative route: A path marked with blue will take you uphill and give a view over the entire area.
The Red Canyon as a whole is very beautiful with rocks in many colours. The signposting with directional markers is excellent. The canyon itself is not that long, may well remind you of the siq at Petra (noruins, though) or even of Antelope Canyon in Arizona.

“Perfect Family Hike”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

This hike is the perfect family hike. It is a circular route and takes about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The gorgeous scenery is an outdoor classroom. Witness ancient rivers that shaped the canyon and be on the lookout for desert flora such as the Acacia Tree. Two caveats: 1. For those afraid of heights, there is a two minute portion of the hike that can be unnerving. I suggest you hold onto the hand grips and avoid looking down. 2. Look for the sign in the middle of the canyon that tells you when to turn back. If you miss the sign, it's another 7-8 hour hike! Remember to bring plenty of water, even in the winter.

“Winter desert hiking”
Reviewed December 10, 2012

The Red Canyon, is a natural phenomenon which offers the hiker a short tour through various geological formations including some ladder climbing, sliding down dry waterfalls and desert flora. The hike is only about an hour which is very long in the summer heat of upwards of 100F but in the winter it is quite pleasant. Entrance is free. Accessible only by private car about 35 km NW of the city of Eilat.
