Just came back from a week at the Royal Beach with my wife, our family and in-laws: a party of 8. I am very widely travelled, have stayed in many 5* DL and boutique hotels and was generally very happy with the hotel.
A few points to bear in mind: we went in relatively low season. It was half-term for some schools, so perhaps not absolutely the quietest time of year, but not far from it. Hence, I found the service very attentive and pleasant. No, they don't know you by name unless you're a regular guest, but then one can hardly expect that in such a large hotel. The property was generally immaculate. We all stayed in Bella Vista rooms: great sea views; clean and comfortable, quiet and good air-con; no real "wow" factor though, but then I wasn't expecting it. Having visited the Dan, Hilton and Queen of Sheba, I would say the pool area at the RB is the nicest: bigger pools, more spacious, nicer landscaping and better atmosphere. (The loungers at the Dan are tightly packed in military lines around the pool, like an amphitheatre).
Buffet breakfast was excellent - fresh and a wide variety. Can get busy at peak times though. The appeal of the buffet dinner started to wane a little after a week but generally a very high standard: everything fresh each day, but not enough for vegetarians and only limited fish dishes. If you are on HB you do get price reductions at Ranch House and Wangs next door - which are superb.
Overall, I was very pleased, but you have to set your expectations appropriately. This is not a 5* European boutique hotel where everything is absoutely perfect with white-glove service and the food cooked by Michelin starred chefs. It is a big, deluxe Israeli hotel where the service is efficient and friendly (and they really do their best to please) and the food plentiful, high quality and hearty. Of all the big 5* hotels in Eilat I would say it is the best. The trick is to get the best deal you can via an agent and go off season when it's quietest if you can. I can well imagine it being horribly overcrowded at Pesach and Christmas.
