SPNI Eilat Field School
Ranked #34 of 56 Specialty Lodging in Eilat

65 shekels a night camping at the field school was a great option for budget accommodation in Eilat during peak holiday season. The campsite has showers and toilets, which were regularly cleaned, and some shaded places. There is also access to electricity and chilled drinking water, and places to barbecue/make fires. There is a minimarket right nextdoor and you can also buy buffet breakfast and dinner (kosher) at the field school dining room - both were good. The campsite is not huge but well-run and other campers were considerate about noise etc. The location is excellent - right opposite the Coral Beach nature reserve and five minutes walk from a free beach, and there's nothing like waking up to a view of mountains and the Red Sea. However, the best thing about this accommodation was the staff, who really dealt superbly with the guests even though the field school was very busy. They also provided great information about nearby hiking options.

My wife and I just finished hiking the INT, if you'll read other reviews I wrote you could see that we normally like our lives comfortable, this time we decided to be thru-hikers all the way and once we hit Eilat - sleep at a campsite (inside a room though, we had enough nights in our tent...)

The guy was very nice on the phone when we called to order, I wasn't listening too good (who could blame me? I just walked in the desert mountains for the whole day...) and I didn't pick up the fact that all beds are either bunk beds or single beds or the fact that we can't really cancel a single night out of our 2 nights order even though we ordered the room less than a day before we got there...
When we got there my wife was really upset with the news and add insult to injury - the room we were introduced to was filthy.
The guy on duty apologized and gave us a different room.

Why do I have mixed feelings then?
On one hand we chose a simple place for a couple of nights, we wanted to support SPNI (Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel) and sleep at their field school.
On the other hand - besides the single beds and the nasty cancellation/change policy the rooms are VERY spartan with an uncomfortable mattress, not the nicest restrooms and showers (something you would expect from a field school that normally hosts kids at a 2-3 day field trip) and for the price we paid (almost 700 nis for 2 nights after discount) we could have added 100-200 nis and just sleep at a nice hotel as this is the low season and hotels in Eilat are pretty cheap.
Breakfast was just okay too.

I believe that it might be okay for families during the high season, but at the low season - there is no point in staying there, just go to a hotel at a similar price.

This is a field school facility. It's like a hostel. Know what you're getting into before you book. Don't expect fancy because this is not fancy. Now, what you WILL get is a clean place to lay your head along with five of your friends. It was a little weird, but there are three bunk beds in the room so six people can sleep in it, and all of the beds are single beds. This place was fine for me and my family but I couldn't see staying here more than a night. There is breakfast and I think dinner, but I believe those cost extra. The location is right on highway 90 and right across from the Coral Reef National Park on the Red Sea.

Me and my husband have stayed here a year ago in May, during national holidays, and this May 2013 as well.
What we like the best about the place - it is a good alternative for budget travelers and the location is perfect. I personally don't like crowded area of central Eilat, and the sea is much more beautiful in south area. It's also really quite at the evening, so if you are not much about going out - I would recommend to choose south beach.

During our first stay, we used camping area of the site.
Advantages - It was very clean, not noisy. They offer you great showers, clean toilets, and some lightning. There are some trees as well which creates some kind of tent.
The disadvantage, as it was already mentioned, is that you need to leave your car outside of the site.
To summarize - you definitely can go and stay on the beach, but I think the facilities they provide in camping area, worth relatively low payment.

This year, we stayed in the room. If you stay in the room - you can use internal protected parking.
The room is very basic, it has 2 level beds - not so romantic if you are travelling as a couple :)
But it's clean, has private shower and toilet, room is equipped with AC, and it has a kettle and tea and coffee bags. They also provide you with bed linen, towels and shampoo and soap.
The breakfast is very good, they have vegetables, eggs, yogurts, some fruits, etc. It's not as crazy as in most fancy Israeli hotels, but you will not leave hungry.

Regarding the staff - in both times we have stayed there, we found them very nice and helpful.
Overall, I think it's a good value.

TIP - if you are a diver and show your diver ID - they will offer you a discount.

The SPNI Field School is slightly out of Eilat on the way to the Taba border crossing. We've camped there before but this time decided to take a room. The room was very basic but clean and equipped with aircon, en-suite shower, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. We left before breakfast every morning but they supplied a take-out breakfast for us. Bread, cheeses, eggs, apple, tomato, cucumber, chocolate pudding etc. A huge amount! A big benefit was that it was very quiet. It's only a 5 min walk towards Eilat to find a couple of good restaurants, 24 hr shop, hotels, dive centre/snorkling etc. Another benefit is the secure parking. If you are simply looking for a quiet, cheap, place to sleep while the days are spent out and about then this is a great place to stay.
