“Surprised that this was the cheapest place in town (-:”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

In need of a cheap place to stay, a group of three travelers booked a room at Arava simply because it was far and away the cheapest place available in Eilat. The beautiful garden facing down the hill toward the water is a fantastic place to hang out and have a bear in the evening. Both the room and the common areas were clean and comfortable. They offer an impressive array of snorkeling, diving, hiking, off-roading and other travel recommendations for those who are rolling into town without any plans. Renting fins and snorkel gear for cheap is also a plus.

Considering the price we were shocked at just how nice the facilities were. The location isn't bad either, right now to my favorite Eilat restaurant (Caso de Brasil) and walking distance to the mall and northern beaches.

I stayed at the hostel just for one night, since I dived in Eilat just to have a break in my trip from Dead Sea to Petra. Arriving at 4 am in Eilat with no booking, they've been nice...they allowed me to leave my luggage and to relax on the sunbeds on the garden(Check-in is at 10 am).

Considering that the best beaches in Eilat are on the way to the border with Egypt, the fact that the hostel is close to the bus station is more helpful than the 10 minutes walking to the city beach.
Rooms (I slept in a 6 bed dorm) are clean but pretty small, toilettes are ok, the common areas (lobby, garden, kitchen) are very good to meet other travellers. Maybe I wouldn't reccomend for a couple looking for a double room or for somebody looking for a single room, but for backapackers is good.

Okay. So I am a pretty open minded individual. Love to travel and love to experience all kinds of properties. My teenage age son (age 15) and I just came back from a month long trip to Israel. My older son is studying there for a year and we accompanied him for a vacation. We rented a room for two nights at Arava Hostel thinking that we would be so busy exploring Eilat that the room amenities did not matter.

So first let me tell you the pros of staying at Arava.
1. Great for college students. You meet people from all over the world and I think its a great experience for them. They have tables, lounges and couches situated outside. So its a great place for social networking.
2. Free wifi (not in your room). Surf the net till your heart's desire.
3. Clean kitchen (did not use) we keep strictly kosher.
4. 15 shekels for a snorkeling mask and mouthpiece for the day. A great bargain and the only highlight of my trip to Eilat.

Now on the cons:
1. They do not give you blankets. They give you one paper thin top sheet. I got very sick down there from whatever and had a high fever in which I was shaking uncontrollably. My son went to the front desk and they just gave us another two top sheets which was the equivalent of one normal top sheet in America. I suffered during the night and the next morning we took the bus back to our apartment in Jerusalem.
2. I have never seen a bathroom like this before. When you shower, make sure the bathroom door is completely shut. Otherwise your room will get flooded. The whole bathroom floor fills will water that pretty much goes up to your ankle. When you are done showering, there is a gigantic squeegy (spelling?) to push the water down the shower drain. You know the kind I am talking about. The kind you see at gas stations to clean your car window. It is huge, but very effective. Showering was not the best experience.
3. I believe this is family run establishment so I will say that only two family members were polite. There was a young lady (probably in her 20's who was very friendly and even offered coffee at night to everyone). Then her father or perhaps uncle (the one without the beard) was also very helpful. He went out of his way to get us directions to places. The mother (I'm guessing) and the other man with the beard seemed abrasive and rude.
4. Would not recommend for families. Not thrilled with Eilat in general but if you have to go there, than spend the extra money and get a better place closer to the beaches.

Room Tip: Do not book unless you are a young, single traveler.

This was my third visit to the Arava Hostel. This hostel is my go-to place when ever i go diving in Eilat. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodates to anything you may need.

The rooms are clean and the outside area is great for the late-afternoons/evenings where you can have your dinner and drinks (there is a fully equipped kitchen within the hostel you can use) with all the other guests in the hostel. The guests are from all over the world and are here either for a holiday in Eilat or as a stop-over on the way to/from Egypt/Jordan/Tel aviv.

There is free wi-fi and you can pay to use the desktops in the lobby.

Overall, i would highly recommend the hostel!

Cheers

Room Tip: You can either choose the dormitories or an en-suite room. If you don't mind sleeping in the sam...

I'd probably give this hostel a week avarage rating, if it wasn't because of the fact that they offer only one key to share among all dorm-residents, resulting in a the feeling of great lack of security. The system is works like this: the last person to leave the room is supposed to leave the key at the reception; hence, the door needs to be locked manually everytime you leave the room. I came back several times during my stay, finding the room unlocked with no one in the room. With no security lockers in the room, my luggage was basically avalible for anyone from the street. That is not ok. Facilities such as showers and common area i found weak avarage as well.
