“Best location for the price”

The staff at the Eilat Youth Hostel and Guesthouse were very helpful. We arrived a day ahead of schedule and the lady at reception did a lot of juggling to manage to get the group of us a room together. On the downside, there is no drinking alcohol on the outdoor seating areas overlooking the Red Sea.

The staff here were friendly and helpful. The rooms and amenities are basic but good.

However, there is a security issue which renders the guest house unsafe. The reception is located on the 2nd floor. This means unauthorised people are able to enter the building and access all the floors except the 2nd floor (but including the 3rd) without being seen by reception. Sadly this is exactly what happened to an English girl who we saw in a hysterical terrified mess after she had been confronted and cornered on a patio on the top floor by a man who had earlier approached her at the pizza restaurant down the road and who had, evidently, followed her steathily to the guest house and all the way to the 3rd floor where she was staying. The staff were very caring towards her afterwards as she was distressed but they refused to call the police and we didnt see her again. My guess is that she checked out after that incident. I was staying in a dorm with other girls but I nonetheless felt frightened for the rest of my stay.

Located at the end of Eilat's main drag across the street from the Meridien, the hostel seems impressive at first glance - a 10-minute walk to the clubs and the beach bars. The terraces on every floor are great for hanging out looking over the city. But the rooms are small and dated, the bathroom wasn't particularly clean either. It's very Spartan - just the basics and nothing else. There's a parking lot that's watched by the front desk via camera and the breakfast is great. There are a couple of computers with internet access that you have to pay to use. Reception is open 24 hours and are very nice.

However, I do have to share my negative experience with them. We booked a tour to Petra with Desert Eco tours for the morning after out arrival to Eilat. The tour company called us and told us that the Jordanian side of the border is closed and they are not doing tours that day. When we arrived at the hostel, we found out that they work with Desert Eco tours, as well. When inquiring whether they're able to take us, the front desk clerk called DE and said that in fact, the border is closed tomorrow.

But it was NOT closed. The next morning we decided to check for ourselves. The Israeli tour companies were protesting Jordan raising prices on Petra tours that originate in Israel. The border was open on both sides.

So the tour company along with the hostel lied to us and many others. Instead of saying that they would not take us because they're on strike, they blamed it on the Jordanians so that less people would go to Petra that day.

We took the trip that day ourselves by hiring a cab but I could not believe that we were so blatantly lied to by both places.

Primarily because of the above, I would not stay here again.

Simple, yet fairly large, hostel near shopping, the mall, ~10 walk to airport and more local places. the strip/boardwalk/Ocean is a short walk/drive/taxi away. My plan was to stay here overnight and leave for Petra Jordan in the morning. Hostel was nice enough to pack a travel meal to have en-route. Bed was fine, TV worked. Internet(for pay) kiosk in lobby. And very friendly front desk ladies. Glad I stayed here. I booked on the phone by calling directly
