“Ideal base for Ephesus and surrounding area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 9, 2013

We spent 4 nights at the Hotel Nazar at the end of May. The owner was most helpful and welcoming, and speaks excellent English. The room was very comfortable, spotlessly clean, plenty of hot water for the shower. The patio area and pool are lovely. The food was great, with wonderful views from the roof terrace. The hotel is conveniently situated close to the town centre and everyone was friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Go for a luxury double if you can, more space and ours overlooked the pool area.

We spent two nights at Hotel Nazar in May 2013. The rooms are simple, quiet, and very clean, the pool and patio area are lovely, the views from the rooftop restaurant are beautiful and the food is delicious. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the center of town and the bus station. The owner, Ilker, and his family are very friendly and helpful. He recommended a group tour of Ephesus, House of the Virgin Mary, Temple of Artemis, and Basilica of St John. We were very happy we decided to go with the group tour - we had a small group with an engaging and knowledgeable guide and we learned a lot more than we would have if we'd done it on our own. We highly recommend Hotel Nazar!

Room Tip: Our room had a lovely view of the pool and castle.

We spent three lovely nights at Hotel Nazar in March 2013. The hotel was lovely, breakfast very yummy and Ilker was a wonderful host helping us make the most of our time in Selcuk and the surrounding area. Should we head to this area of Turkey again we will be sure to spend time at the Hotel Nazar.

Inker and his family make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive at their hotel. The rooms are simply furnished but comfortable and spotless.
It is the service that we received from Ilker that we would like to comment on. My husband needed emergency dental care on the day we were to leave Selcuk. Ilker telephoned a dental hospital in Izmer and arranged for us to go there. Ilker then drove us to Izmer, stayed and interpreted for us, helped us pick up a prescription and then arranged for a taxi to take us to our bus. I do not know how we would have managed without his help, we cannot thank him enough
Nothing is too much trouble, he will arrange tours, recommend good places to eat and even where to buy carpets that are made locally that benefit the women of the area, not Chinese imports!
I highly recommend staying at hotel Nazar in Selcuk

Great people - family owned and operated and it shows. The owner speaks very clear English and is a nice sociable guy.
Full Service - picked us up and dropped us off @ Izmir Airport (easy flights from IST though Star Alliance (Turkish Airlines - Voted #1 in Europe) for a reasonable fee. This place is located in the heart of Selcuk - which is a suburb town near the Ephesus site - http://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/aegean-coast/selcuk

The Hotel is a close drive (not walk) to Ephesus site. Try going to Ephesus around 4pm and that will leave 3 hours for a walk through after most of the guided tours (from Istanbul or the Cruise Ships) are over for the day.

In terms of Food:
Its a close walk to downtown Selcuk area for great food. We tried Ejder Restaurant which was amazing. Try the Chicken kebab and ask the owners about Bill Clinton and Monica - I am sure they will tell you the story. ;-)

Nazar offers a great dinner service with amazing wine - worth the money you will pay. They also offer a complimentary home cooked breakfast. Very nice indeed on their rooftop terrace with views of an ancient fort and the Roman Aqueducts as well as the rooftops of many local homes - not necessarily beautiful but very much a viewpoint of how local people live inside Aegean Coast in Turkey.
(f) Rooms were adequate, very clean with amazing Western bathrooms but nothing fancy....And... the beer was cold and the pool was nice and warm. Probably great if you are a backpacker but nothing special if you are used to Westin or Ritz (although you wont find that type of accommodation near Ephesus anyways). To note - you will need to walk up stairs - so if you are disabled this will be difficult / not possible. Because the owners are tour guides they can hook you up with lots of options either before you get there or once you arrive - there are more options than you might think. We only stayed one night - hit up Ephesus and moved on but our feeling was that we could easily stay 3-5 nights.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The location of the hotel is excellent as it provides you easy access to the downtown restaurants and bus station, while being tucked in a little neighborhood. We enjoyed sitting on the room balcony at night and listening to the neighborhood unwind. The breakfast was not overly elaborate (eggs, bread, olives and cheese) but it did the trick. The rooms are simple but very clean. The pool area was nice. Also the hotel offers laundry service which was very handy. We did not eat the evening dinner as we preferred visiting places in town, so can't comment on that. For the cost and location, I recommend the hotel.

Hotel Nazar has a good location, though it wasnt easy to find (it's in a back street of a residential neighborhood) and it was an easy walk to the beautiful Isa Bey mosque and the Basilica of St John. Ilker, the new owner, is helpful and omnipresent at all times of the day and night - it's clear he is trying very hard.
The only two things that were lacking were 1) the shower drains were very slow to drain, and I hate that icky feeling 2) We felt he over-marketed the hotel dinner (and based on earlier tripadvisor reviews, we were quick to bite the bait) which turned out to be below average, greasy and listless, lacking in any flavors. His rooftop ambience made up partly for the very basic fare dished out, but with so many other local choices, we could have had a much more memorable first dinner at this lovely town. Later, we found Bella and another local eatery by Isa Bey which had a vibrant local ambience and a yummy dinner (Bella) a sister hotel of Niliya. For a few euro more, the Bella rooms were much nicer and classier (we peeked in)
There was also a little cottage across from the basilica that can be rented through owners direct that I will be sure to rent the next time I'm ever there!! It even has its own private hamam.
The best part of hotel Nazarz was its hardworking and helpful owner and we wish him good luck going forward.

ILKERSEN, Owner at Hotel Nazar, responded to this review, June 8, 2013
Dear Our Valued Guest,
I would like to thank you for sharing your comments here and are very sorry that you did not enjoy the food that we served for dinner. Your husband also mentioned the same problem in his review. I'll tell the same thing to you as your complaint is also the same. We very much regret that you did not mention anything to us during the dinner which would have enabled us to swiftly change the meal or else recommend you an alternate place to eat. As it is said, there's no accounting for taste.
Again, we appreciate the feedback and hope that in the future, you will give us the privilege of a second chance.

Sincerely,
Ilker SEN
