Owner description: "Nec Temere Nec Timide" (Neither rashly nor timidly) Ephesus Handcrafts school and carpet exchange point is a family establishment for generations. We are a locally operating craft learning school and a carpet exchange post.We work with the local people of Ephesus and nearby small villages. This is a family tradition to welcome everyone who walks into our spacious and well designed school-center. Once you walked in,You will be surrounded by the amazing variety of many different colors, yarns, fabrics and the sizes of the carpets.>> You could actually see the patient carpet weaving ladies little by little advancing on their rugs. In the mean time, You could also see the ancient and the only way of silk making process, as it was done centuries ago. As a part of the educational program for local and nearby villagers, we research and experiment the new color patterns with the old vegetable dyes. This is rarely seen tradition. If you are lucky that day, you could see this very interesting dyeing process in live. We are actually right there at Ephesus. No need to say how much we are proud of our famous collection of individually selected handmade rugs and kilims.Browsing through our collection is a challenging effort and you are welcome to do so.For those who might be interested in having our rugs or kilims for their home, we also have a precise and hassle free door to door shipping service for free of charge. An extra reminder for you taste buds; We always have a cup of Turkish coffee or a glassful of Apple tea ready in our kitchen and we would be delighted share with.

I visited Ephesus Handcrafts as part of a group. They're obviously into marketing, as a number of tour groups stop here. They served lunch to us prospective buyers in a lovely outdoor patio, let us watch weavers at work, and demonstrated how silk is made into thread. Wrapping it all up, the owner gave us an excellent lecture on the evolution of carpet weaving.

At lecture's end, salesmen appeared as we were left to wander about. After some "negotiating," I feel prey to a stunning carpet, which currently adorns a living room wall. It was shipped as promised, arriving in fine shape. Overall, a fine experience.

“See First Hand How Turkish Carpets Are Made!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2014

I was part of a Road Scholar tour. We were provided with lunch, a talk by the owner, and a tour through all the carpet- making steps from dyeing to the finished products. We saw the plants that provide the dyes, the wool of different hues in baskets, the silk cocoons floating in water being spun onto spools, women sitting at their looms following patterns etc. and the showrooms of beautiful finished carpets.
The women weaving carpets were all part of a program that the owners had created to teach and encourage women's independence, something that was not prevalent in that area until then.
This is an interesting, educational experience. It was nice to see how my carpets were being made. Bring dimensions with you from home, as you can have rugs made to your size and color needs.

“Lovely rugs and a nice tour but watch out about overpaying!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

We stopped at here as part of tour group from a cruise line. The tour was very informative; the most interesting thing was how silk is extracted from silk worms. We were then taken inside to an area that had hundreds of rugs and many were ceremoniously unwrapped for our viewing. The guide explained the difference between silk, wool and wool and cotton blend rugs and that the most distinctive asset of Turkish rugs from others are that they are double knotted. At the end the salesmen get very pushy if you are interested in buying.

Never take their first offer and be willing to walk away if they don't take your offer for less depending on the price of the rug. Many of the prices at first are ridiculously high, hoping you are dumb enough to pay that amount. Also, in Turkey the government pays the shipping to encourage the rug trade and this company prices their rugs for you in U.S. dollars not Euros so you know exactly how much it is when you get the bill.

Thank you for your nice words and your clear statement. You know " over paying "term is relative and flexible. But again thank you for your warning for anyone that comes to Ephesus Handcrafts. Simply, my recommendation is; tell them to find the "Arturo" (owner)... :-)
