“The best hotel in selcuk!!!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

My husband and I stayed at this lovely hotel in July with our 2 kids and my parents. The rooms were very clean and beautiful. The breakfast was amazing! The location was close ( walking distance) to all the places you need it to be. Most importantly the staff were spectacular. They were so helpful in arranging for anything we needed such as arranging for a private tour guide, making dinner reservations, even escorting us to a carpet store 10 minutes out if town when we asked them to. All if us (including the 3 and 7 year old) enjoyed our stay there and can't wait to go back!

Can't say enough good things about this hotel. It is GORGEOUS and very comfortable. The staff is very accommodating and gracious. The breakfast is great as well and more food than you could possibly eat! We'll definitely stay here again when we go back to Selcuk!

The hotel room was beautifully decorated and looks just like the pictures online. It has a hair dryer and basic amenities such as shampoo, conditioner and shower bath were provided. The front staff was very friendly and helped us hire a taxi to bring us to the different touristic spots in the area (the total cost was reasonable for 2 pax).

The hotel is conviently located in the middle of a neighbourhood near the Isabey Mosque, Seljuk mosque, supermarkets and restaurants. We loved we were living with the locals; made us feel as if we were living amongs them.

The breakfast spread was really good. There were a variety of food options - some Turkish food, some western ones. Most notable were the pancakes. They were soft, fluffy and buttery. There was no need to eat them with maple syrup :).

The Saint John in Selcuk is hard to review because it has some wonderful attributes and a few negative ones. It is a small hotel located a block off the main road. It is hard to find but one of the staff escorted us there when we called. There is nothing of interest next to the hotel but the restaurant area of Selcuk near the aqueduct is a reasonable walk. I can only describe the hotel's decor as "flamboyant" - lots of gold, shimmery damask fabrics, rather out of character for the location. The building is an older one that has been recently converted, and nicely done, but the rooms are quite small. Our first morning, there was no hot water in the shower, but after we called the desk they got it fixed. We also had a problem with the air conditioning blowing directly down on the bed, but the owners brought us a down comforter. The breakfast buffet had a wide selection including tasty local pastries. There is a small pool in the center courtyard but was unfortunately quite cold. One of the best, and rarely mentioned, features of the hotel is the rooftop terrace. The view up the hill to the Ayasuluk Fortress is wonderful. It is lighted at night and it was a great spot to have a glass of wine and relax.

Saint John was one of our favourite hotels on a recent visit to Turkey. It is located close to the town centre (train station, restaurants, tour buses) and a short walking distance from some of the important sites, including the museum (closed for renovation when we were there) and St John's Basilica (a walk of about 10 minutes or so). Ephesus is a short bus trip away. We walked to the hotel from the train station in about 20 minutes. The hotel is attractive and comfortable. The main room was a tad small but nicely appointed and quiet; it looked onto a courtyard and swimming pool. The curtains did not block out a lot of light, but this is a minor gripe. Service was excellent and very friendly, and breakfast offered a wide range of good quality food. Some reviewers have commented on the not-so-affluent neighbourhood with its active street life during the day (e.g. kids playing soccer on the road); however, we found it quite appealing, as people were friendly and we never felt uneasy. I strongly recommend this hotel and would happily stay there again.

A lovely family owned and run hotel in Selcuk, perfect for a visit to Ephesus.
We were picked up at Izmir by the owner, Mr Sabit Tek, and safely driven to the hotel. Gorgeous rooms, extremely friendly and helpful staff...we wished we had been staying longer. Great breakfast. Would definitely recommend and would definitely stay there again.

Although we normally choose hotels based on our trusty Fodor's guidebook's (always outstanding) recommendations, none of the guidebook's recommendations for Selcuk sounded up to par, so we took a chance on Saint John Hotel, and booked it based solely on Tripadvisor's reviews. And I am happy to say that the risk paid off! This hotel is really a gem.
The location is a bit unusual--- the elegant hotel is definitely something of an anomaly in the midst of a working-class neighborhood. In fact, we drove right by the hotel several times before recognizing it, which is really kind of surprising, because if we'd actually taken a hard look at the building as we passed by, we'd have seen that this building was far more elegant than the others, with its beautiful marble and polished gold gleaming through the lovely ground floor windows.
I am surprised that this property is listed on Tripadvisor under the "B&B and Inns" category, because it seems entirely comparable (and in some way superior) to other very fine small hotels we've stayed in, both in Turkey and in other countries around the world. I would not categorize it as a B&B or an inn. It is definitely a full-service hotel, very similar to a boutique hotel, that is staffed around the clock and offers almost every amenity you could wish for.
The hotel common areas are lovely, graceful, and inviting. The guest rooms are positioned around a central, Roman-style courtyard, with a swimming pool, statuary, and lots of comfortable, intimate spaces to sit and chat or eat a snack.
Upon arrival, we were invited to sit at a bistro table beside the pool, and the owner brought us tea and a delicious banana cake, which he said his daughter had just made. It was really a wonderful, warm welcome.
Our room was charming. It was on the second floor, overlooking the courtyard and pool. It was beautifully appointed, and the bathroom was stocked with plenty of toiletries. The shower was large (although it did run short on hot water a couple of times....). The hotel caters mainly to English and French-speaking guests, and the fact that the owner lived many years in America is evident, as everything is very up to American standards, and indeed, was the most "American" hotel we stayed in, as far as amenities and policies. We sent our laundry out, and it came back the same day, washed and folded. The price for laundry was exceptionally reasonable. (Which actually makes this hotel superior to American ones!)
This is a family-run establishment, and everyone who works there is extremely friendly, polite, and eager to help out with whatever we needed (they even let me put some things in their personal refrigerator, since the air conditioning in the rooms stays off when the room is not occupied. Very accommodating!).
They had excellent recommendations for dinner in the evenings and gave us good advice on everything we inquired about.
We also loved the adorable kittens who lived right outside the front door. They were so cute, and so fun to watch!
This elegant little hotel treats you like family, and we were genuinely sad when it was time to say good-bye. We hope to visit Saint John Hotel again, next time we're in Turkey. We highly recommend it!
