“Best staff...and breakfast...in Selçuk!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013 via mobile

The staff at Urkmez can't be beat. W e realized upon arrival that we left our coats on the Izmir airport shuttle to Selçuk (PS...most airlines offer free shuttles from the airport to Selçuk...we had no idea until we arrived!). We asked the owner if he knew if the bus would be coming back by, and he contacted the airline, then the shuttle driver, arranged for the bus to come back, then had a staff member walk us to the bus to reclaim our coats! Way above and beyond. He also later walked us to the train station and helped us purchase tickets back to the airport (quick, pretty and cheap ride--and goes straight to the airport, as opposed to the minibus, which doesn't).

We also got a TON of help from one of the workers--Soner--when it came to directions, translation, recommendations...even carrying our bags. He was great.

Notably, the breakfast at Urkmez was unreal. They hire a local cook to prepare items each morning, and she is so great. The food is delicious, and varies each morning, which is not the case at many other places.

We had an excellent stay, and would recommend to anyone, anytime--Urkmez was great!

We had a very pleasant stay in this hotel. The bed sheets were very clean and I had such a wonderful sleep! Yes, the bathroom was not five star but chances are you are in Selcuk to enjoy other things :) The bathroom is good enough. One thing we found funny was the bathroom door was transparent, or rather translucent. We were a couple so we found it funny but if you are not - just so you know, the person outside can see what you are doing inside. haha! Heater worked fine, TV was very tiny - but we didnt need it either. Breakfast is truly amazing. The lady makes the most wonderful omelettes. Breakfast is extensive enough to fuel you up till afternoon. Worth mentioning is that Jimmy and Juju took care of everything - arranging transportation, tickets, giving tips on retaurants etc. Kudos to the brothers for doing an awesome job!

We spent 3 nights at Urkmez. The room was simple with a small balcony looking out onto the castle, which was beautifully lit at night. The room had its own heater/AC and it quickly warmed the room even by turning it off when we left during the day. The bathroom had a small leak and we usually only wear socks in the room (hotel provides slippers!) so we had to be careful to avoid the small puddle on the floor.

The best, though, was the staff. The manager and his brother speak excellent English and saved us time and money repeatedly by telling us which museums were closed (sadly, the town museum with many Efes artifacts was under renovation but they showed us another local museum with the town's more recent history which was free and interesting) and how to take the train back to the Izmir airport rather than a bus to the city center (cheaper and direct to the airport)! The housekeeper/cook who prepared a delicious Turkish breakfast each morning was sweet and friendly. And one night there was a city-wide power outage which only lasted maybe 20 minutes but the manager right away had all the hallways lit with candles... lovely.

The hotel has a small book exchange in the sitting area. The wifi was strong in our room and in the comfortable sitting area. We found a great Turkish movie (English subtitles) filmed in Central Turkey which we borrowed for an evening and watched on our laptop.

Great visit; I can highly recommend the Urkmez.

My wife, my daughter and I stayed in the Urkmez hotel at Selcuk on November 30th and December 1st last year, i.e., in 2012. We got down from the train from Izmir at aound 5 in the evening, dead beat after a day of hectic travelling and a delayed flight and overjoyed to find that the Urkmez where we were booked to stay was just a little over a hundred metres from the railway station. The room we were given was on the second floor overlooking the Selcuk museum and everything that Selcuk had to offer, by way of the town square, restaurants, cafes and curio/ gift shops were within five minutes on foot. Even the remains of the acquaducts and the cathedral were practicall next door. But the room was way too small for three people, there was no furniture except a rather rickety side-table and the bath was a bit of a joke - barely big for you to squeeze in, with the walls practically touching your skin if you tried to move. The small restaurant on the terrace has a decent view of the fort/palace and the breakfast is not bad, either, but you need to climb something like forty steep steps to reach it, and if your knees are not young, you would feel like giving breakfast a go-bye. The staff are courteous and even friendly, but we would much rather have an indifferent staff manning a hotel which can offer you a room and your breakfast on a lower floor and where the room and the bath are not pigeon- holes. Although I hate to say this for a friendly place, I would not stay in the Urkmez in Selcuk if I were to visit Ephesus again.

Room Tip: Please make it a point to ask the size of the room and the bath, unless you are fond of rock-climbin...

Rooms a bit small , but super location , 2 minute walk from train, center of town. Very helpful and friendly staff. Great value. They could use a few more amenities like a chair to put your suitcase on. Hot water takes forever , but it does happen eventually. Great hamam around the corner only 17 US.

Excellent location, we arrived by train and it's not more than 10 minutes easy walk in a quiet town. Hotel is up a flight of stairs and there is no lift, this may present a problem if you have a heavy suitcase or a lot of luggage. The staff will help though without complaint.
Room was nice a clean, the shower was a bit temperamental and tended to be difficult to get to the right temperature. The furniture/decoration in the room was a bit mis-matched, they seemed to have raided Ikea for most pieces but it was in good condition overall.
Breakfast was on the terrace, it was too cold when we were there to enjoy but nevertheless was very pleasant. If I would stay in Selcuk again I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed two nights at this delightful hotel. Jimmy and staff went out of their way to help us with bus timetables and an extra side table and light for our room. The rooftop area has a great view and good breakfast, can also watch a film up there if you want (they have a few DVDs). Their lounge is welcoming with books on the local area and even magazines in English. We asked for a room with a balcony which was nice to sit on in the sunshine. Have to run the shower for quite sometime for hot water - pretty basic bathroom. Beds comfortable, new pillows. Location great and their restaurant next door was delightful with music on the night we were there (Fridays and Saturdays). Location was perfect, near the bus station, very central and quiet.

Room Tip: No elevator so first floor with balcony worked for us
