“Not a better place to stay”

The entire hotel is such a wonderful retreat. We spent three nights here and enjoyed the quiet surroundings. We did need to take taxis to town (everyone said you could walk but we are seniors) The bed linen has embroidered edges! The beds were comfortable. The staff was very willing to make sure we were confortable. The breakfast was great and plentiful.

We stayed for 3 nights, and would highly recommend this small, tranquil hotel. The main features are the pretty courtyard where breakfast is served, filled with fruit trees, flowers and plants, a lovely spot to relax with a drink or read a book; the food - they clearly take pride in this, and the breakfast is made up of locally grown produce (crepes or pastries, turkish cheeses, homemade jams and fruit and olives etc). Take the opportunity to have the evening meal - we were served a delicious 3 course meal on a terrace two doors down as the sun set. The man course of sea bass (levrek) in a delicious sauce was one of the best dishes I ate in Turkey, and the host was friendly and charming.

The service, location and atmosphere of the place were all excellent. the rooms had good aircon as well as ceiling fans, bathroom a bit basic but with all the essentials.

A few practical points - there are no hairdryers and no TV in the rooms, but Idris is very happy to have guests join him for the evening in the communal living room. Isa Bey mosque and St John's basilica are extremely close by, and the centre of Selcuk where restaurants and shops are located is a five minute walk, as is the "otopark' where you can taxis/dolmuses to Ephesus (taxi to top gate cost us 16 TL), Sirince (dolmus, 2.50 TL) and Pamucak beach (Dolmus, 2.50 TL). Take earplugs if the 5am call to prayer is going to bother you - although we found it to be a quite pleasant disturbance. Options for tours to Ephesus booked from the hotel seemed to be of the full-day only variety when we visited, and we weren't sure we wanted to be there for that long, especially in the heat, so w just got up at 8, had breakfast, and got a taxi to the top gate (so we didn't have to go uphill) and wandered through the ruins without a guide. Full day tours were 40 € each. When you first arrive, you may find the hotel a bit difficult to find, so have a map or directions prepared if you are arriving by taxi.

When the tour bus took the corner leading into the street where the Nilya Hotel is situated, I thought to myself ...... "oh dear"
The area around did not look too kosher to me, but as soon as the bus stopped, the manager came out, greeted us very friendly, and I did not have the opportunity of asking the bus to take us to another hotel .......

Just as well!! (And thank goodness for that!)

As said, "Don't judge a book ....."
The Hotel is incredible - small detail in the garden, and at the breakfast area makes this a great experience. The Hotel is small, admittedly, but filled with many antique articles, phonograms, telephone etc. - with most (95% according to the Manager) in a working condition, as illustrated when we listened to a 78 rpm record playing. By the way, the back ground music is Classical, and very fitting to the atmosphere. All in all a great enjoyable experience.
Breakfasts are great (English, believe it or not!) and dinner can be arranged.
One small point, I was incorrectly charged - I paid with Euro's instead of Turkish Lira (I did not have enough of the local currency), and I was overcharged by about 50 TYL or so. (I doubt whether that was intentional though!!) Make sure you have the local currency with you!

My husband & I stayed there for two nights a few weeks ago. From the moment I emailed for reservation, to the time we checked in, and checked out, we were greeted with warmth, great hospitality and professionalism. Idris & Nilgun are great! The hotel is very centrally located. The rooms are so cutely decorated (with authentic items), elegant and simple & clean. The breakfast, oh my the breakfast... Served at the patio right upfront, comprised of home-made jam, and traditional Turkish breakfast. To top it off, their dog "Badem" is the sweetest loving dog. I would highly recommend this place. We wish we could have stayed more.

My daughter and I stayed two nights and fell in love with the hotel. From the moment we walked in through the gates into the courtyard, we knew we had made the right choice. The courtyard is full of flowers, small trees and beautiful comfortable tables and chairs. There was even a little pond in the corner. Our room was spacious, clean and traditionally decorated with a wonderful view from the terrace outside, where we could sit and relax. The room and bathroom contained little personal touches that you dont find in the ordinary hotels. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The traditional breakfast, which was served in the garden, was delicious with homemade jams and more than enough to set us up for a day of sightseeing. Nilya is a haven of peace. We felt we were staying with a family and sharing their home.

My family of three stayed at the Hotel Nilya a few weeks ago and just loved it. As others have said, it is a lovely, relaxing spot with excellent hosts. The early morning call to prayer can be loud so bring your earplugs! Breakfast was wonderful. I would return anytime and recommend it highly to others.
