“Don't miss house of the Virgin Mary”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

We enjoyed this visit to this important biblical site. The House of the Virgin Mary had a lot of visitors but all moved very smoothly. We lit candles in the shrine and drank from the fountain. We filled up some water bottles to bring home to others. The wishing wall was full of notes and was a sight to see,

“Great to see if you are Catholic”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

It is not really the house of Mary. Rather a small chapel build on the foundations where they think Mary has lived. Several popes have visited this place as well. It is near the Ephesus and not to be missed.

“To believe or not to believe”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

This site is subjective: if you believe that St. Mary once lived here, it is worth the trip but if you don’t than you might think it’s a waste. We had rented a car so we drove up there but I’d recommend that you take a taxi rather than a tour bus. There is a car park fee, only 8 Lira so it’s very cheap; St. Mary’s house does not have an entrance fee. We went at around 5 o’clock and that is the best time to go as all the tourists and groups have long gone. When we went inside the house, there is a peaceful atmosphere, even for non-Christians like us. Inside there’s a shrine of St. Mary and a monk. For Christians you can do a prayer and then quietly leave but otherwise you can just look around then exit. You can make a donation and get a minimum of two candles and light them outside of the house. After there’s a spring of holy water and you can fill your water bottles and drink it. Then next to it is a wishing wall where you can write wishes on paper and then attach it to the wall. Also there’s a café and some souvenir shops so you could stop there, get some drinks and then make your way out. Even though we’re of different religion, I still think that this is worth the stop for the relaxing atmosphere and food.

Great drive up to this elevated site with fabulous views over the castle. Once there a serene and holy place in the woods. Not what I expected but well worth the visit
