“Great house in great location”
Reviewed June 1, 2012 for a stay in May 2012

E spent a great week staying at Goldsmith's house in Selcuk. The house itself is in a really pretty part of town, close to the centre yet far enough away to feel tranquil. The house itself was great - really clean, had a well equipped kitchen and the living spaces (both indoor and outside) were great. In terms of location Selcuk was really good - lots to see and do within a reasonable distance (we visited the main sites round Selcuk as well as Dilek national park) and found for our pace of site visiting a week was just right. Overall a really good holiday location and would fully recommend.

“The most wonderful holiday I've ever had”
Reviewed May 17, 2012 for a stay in April 2012

We stayed at Goldsmith's House for a week in April this year and it was absolutely perfect for us. We were looking for a holiday in a nice house, in an interesting town with good food, close to plenty of historical attractions and a beach; this is exactly what we found.

The house itself is lovely - clean, good quality furnishings and everything you need for a comfortable stay. The garden was beautiful and it was lovely to be able to dip our toes in the pool. The location of the house is ideal, right in an old and pretty part of town but a short walk to the centre. The town is brilliant as a base, it's easy to spend a few afternoons wandering around - there are lots of nice shops to look round, a couple of historical attractions and different types of baklava to try! The market on Saturday was brilliant, well worth organising your time so you can go to it and there are some really tasty restuarants to choose from.

There are plenty of historical sites to go and visit, that's the main reason we chose the area and we were in no way disappointed! The beach is nice, very close to the town (I guess there are buses, but we hired a car for the week and the drive was about 10 minutes).

All in all I would recommend the area to anyone looking for the type of holiday we were, but most importantly I'd recommend booking with Alison!! She made getting there and back so easy, organising transfers for us and getting a little bit of shopping in for our arrival. She knows so much about the area and is willing to advise on anything, I felt like she genuinely wanted us to have a good holiday and was happy to help us.

I think because of the way Allison works the whole trip had the convenience of a package holiday, but without an annoying rep, irish pub or fight for a sun lounger in sight! I've been busy recommending it since we got back, and can't wait for a reason to return.

“Exceptional Vacation Rental”
Reviewed January 8, 2012 for a stay in December 2011

We were in the Selcuk area for 3 days over New Years 2011 and wanted spacious accommodations as we were with our two 20-something children, who wanted the freedom to explore and stay up late, esp new years eve. Goldsmith House fit the bill to a tee, and more. It was very clean (I am a clean-freak), had all the amenities we needed, incl iPod player, and was beautiful. The surroundings were quiet (no dogs, no cars). The minaret was a gentle call to prayer. The house was a short walk into town with its restaurants and shops. We walked it often enough that we became regulars with the locals. Alison stocked the fridge with a few items for us, on request. Nice touch!

The house is centrally heated, and once we figured out how to set the heat, it was perfect. The washer has english instructions. We dried our clothes on hangers & radiators through out the house. No need for a dryer, even in winter.

Alison arranged a car rental for a week from Izmir airport as we did an Aegean circuit before we got to Selcuk. It was about the same price as Economy Car Rental but we felt would be more reliable. On the return, we were driven to Izmir airport via mini-bus.

Carpets are much cheaper in Selcuk than Istanbul. After looking at many stores in both towns and doing web research, we went to the highly recommended Dekorativ Rug & Kilim Gallery (1005. Sokak, no. 11, Atatürk Mh.) where we finally found our carpet. The 2 owners are delightful with a passion for carpets, absolutely no sales pressure, and are honest and reliable, according to customers who had carpets shipped abroad.

In summary, great accommodations. We'd love to come back in warmer weather.

“I Wanna Live Here!”
Reviewed November 10, 2011 for a stay in October 2011

What an excellent place to stay for a week...except that wasn't long enough. Very well maintained, attractive (the photos provided by the owner are actually accurate portrayals). Too cool for the pool, but it certainly looked inviting. Loved the property and landscaping.

The location is very convenient (I have no idea why the previous reviewer walked uphill to get to town...must have been lost), not only to local conveniences but also as homebase for our daytrips to Priene, Melitos, Dydimus, Aphrodisia, Pammukkale, etc. The ancient Asa Bey Mosque is a 2 minute walk, St. John's Basilica ruins 5 minutes (now that is uphill), Artemis Temple ruins maybe 10 minutes...and all three are within sight!

Only negatives we experienced were the slab-hard bed and running out of bottled water (provided by the landlord), which took a couple days to have replaced...plus the replacement was delivered late in the evening, after we'd gone to bed. Unlike the previous reviewer, we had no issues with the clothes washer, but a dryer would be nice. It rained nearly 2 days while we were there so using the provided clothes line was not an option. We learned there is no alternative...apparently laundromats are unheard of. Ended up packing dirty laundry for our trip back to Istanbul/US. Eww.

There were 3 of us traveling together, me, my wife, and a female friend. I adopted the 2nd bathroom/shower room as my own men's shower/bathroom and loved it. It's freestanding from the house and quite large. The main bathroom is also large, particularly by Turkish/European standards. We Americans do like our bathrooms spacious.

I included some photos of the place on my blog at turkeychronicles.blogspot.com if you're interested.

One other thing. Alison was quite helpful with arrangements made via emails from us weeks before arrival, e.g., she set us up with a rental car, had us picked up at Izmir airport, etc. We appreciated that a lot.

“Positives Outweigh Negatives”
Reviewed October 5, 2010 for a stay in August 2010

Our family stayed in Goldsmith House at Selcuk during August 2010. In preparing such a comprehensive list of positives and negatives as that which follows, this is submitted as much for the benefit of Aegean Rentals in maintaining its level of high service, as for the intending visitor.

Our view was that the positives outweighed the negatives by a considerable margin, but in view of the relatively high weekly rental charges, all such issues as those raised below really should be attended to as a matter of priority.

Positives:
1) Very quiet location, well away from the hustle and bustle of the town and at a completely walled-in property with lockable gate to courtyard.
2) A couple of rooftop restaurants less than a minute’s walk away.
3) Mini-market 5 minutes’ walk away and town centre shops perhaps 10-15 minutes’ walk.
4) A virtual 'home from home' with everything available that one might need to self-cater.
5) Spotlessly clean rooms.
6) Comfortable seating and dining areas.
7) Plenty of shady areas, again with seating/tables.
8) Pool and sun-loungers – shared with adjacent property – with lighting that permitted use at a late hour, particularly when evenings proved to be extremely hot. (What hotel would permit that??)
9) An un-metered telephone – which we respected by only using for a couple of local calls.
10) Daily refuse collection – vital for self-catering. (Where would that occur in the UK!!)
11) Good transport connections from the town centre to all parts. These included a direct rail link to Izmir Airport.
12) Plenty of street parking outside the property.
13) Close proximity to Ephesus and other major historical sites.

Negatives:
1) Not on a ‘dolmus’ (minibus) route. A long up and downhill walk into town if one does not have one’s own transport. Not advisable for the elderly, especially in the height of summer!
2) No maid service and no exchange of bed-linen made during fortnightly stays (a very unusual situation in our experience). In our case, we had to repeatedly resort to use of the washing machine – not the sort of thing one should be expected to be doing when on holiday ‘away from it all’!
3) All the controls on the washing machine were in Turkish – a language which, it is suspected, 99% of visitors to Goldsmith House would be incapable of understanding! To get the thing to work properly, this could only be arrived at by trial and error.
4) Doors to patio and to kitchen area did not lock and, with each door of the property possessing a different type of lock anyway, a whole bunch of keys had to be carried around.
5) The very complex intruder alarm system was inoperable, as no effort had been made to provide us with the security combination.
6) No air-conditioning – potentially a problem for some in the height of summer – although this was probably reflected in the price and, admittedly, large fans were provided in lieu in each bedroom.
7) Some steep steps up to the patio, unprotected by safety railings.
8) Vegetation in the property was not maintained, causing pathways and steps at the rear to become obstructed by tree branches. As a consequence of this, my wife sustained a serious injury to her foot, requiring 5 stitches at the local emergency clinic.
9) The lower garden was not watered at all during the whole of our stay and lawns/flora suffered as a consequence. Fallen leaves were also left un-swept from pathways.
10) Although not a problem to us (as there were probably far worse unseen horrors floating in the sea-water at the beach), there was evidence of algae starting to form in the corners of the floor of the pool. This should have been regularly attended to.
11) The satellite TV and DVD player – as mentioned in the ‘blurb’ (in July/August 2010) were both absent.
12) A potentially lethal toaster in the kitchen (at least, in August), with a dangerously frayed cable.
13) The advertised wireless Internet proved to be painlessly slow in operation and totally inaccessible throughout much of the day.
14) All the (many) books in the bookshelf were in German (albeit fine for Germans!)
15) The noise from the mosque’s loudspeakers in the middle of the night. (Yes, one should expect this sort of thing in a Muslim country, but the close proximity of said establishment should have been made clear in advance.)
16) The door to the “fully-fitted goldsmith workshop” was locked and no key was provided to gain access.
17) When our feed-back was presented to the property agent, Alison, on our final day, her response to each of the more negative aspects merely was that we “should have telephoned her” and that she “would have attended to it straight away”. Particularly as she had promised on more than one occasion to call in to make sure everything was okay, and never did (indeed she was away on a cruise for the first week of our stay … in the height of the season!!), without wishing to cause any undue offence to Alison, this was clearly a ‘cop-out’ that may well have been experienced by other visitors in the past.

It is hoped that our perceptions are taken on-board in a positive manner, for Goldsmith House is, otherwise, the perfect place to stay!

Thank you for your review Alan, it is always good to get feedback, positive and sometime negative, nice for me to get suggestions to try and make things better if possible. I would like to also add a few points if i may. It is not necessary to walk up and down the hill to walk into town if you don't want too, there are also flat alternatives, it does make the distance slightly more but it is still very pleasant. For all guest staying at any of the properties i rent i always say as i did to you 'Please do call me if there is anything you might want or need i am available 24 hours ' whether it may be a maid service, sweeping up the garden leaves etc etc, i like to be available to help when needed but not intrusive. ...... I did not receive any telephone calls from you asking if i could sort out any of the above mentioned, what a shame it was left to the last day to tell me as most things could have been rectified immediately, omitting the mosque and the steep hill, of course !!! Best wishes to you and your family and thank you for your comments, Alison
