Agaoglu My City Hotel
Ranked #475 of 1,163 Hotels in Istanbul
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I've been in Istanbul more than a dozen times in quite a few hotels (both on leisure and business). I can honestly say this is one of the best business oriented hotels that I've visited.
The staff is very helpful and nice.
The rooms are huge and clean.
I see some people say the location is bad - this may be true if you are hoping for a visit to the historic part of the city but it's amazing for a business trip (10 mins away from all major financial companies main offices, manufacturers, pharmacy companies and many more - enough to say it's in the industry center of the city).
The hotel provides it's own taxi service - taxis arrive 1-2 mins after being called, have good quality and you can trust (taxi service pricing is an issue in Istanbul if you are a foreigner).

I've been to the hotel 5 times so far and I'm looking forward to my next visit.

This hotel is sold as a business hotel. It would have to be, it's location has nothing to offer tourists. However, as a business hotel it doesn't do too well either. A room with no table or desk to work at, and in-room Internet (wired and wireless) that was less than useless. The bar area has flawless coverage, but the 20+ other hotspots (there are a lot of them competing with each other) around the hotel must have been set up by someone with a diploma from Fisher Price.

In a week I've been promised a 'service company' coming in to fix the network no less than three times, and the night staff's solution is "try again tomorrow".

In short, if you value being connected on your trip, stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Let the brown water run clear before running a bath - and rooms facing the mosque are great for catc...

This is primarily a business hotel, busy during the week with most of the meeting rooms are booked up, but on the weekend you will have the place to yourself. Being deep in the Asia side, you are not positioned for the tourist sector at all. It will take you just under an hour by taxi (30TL) and boat(2TL) to get to Eminonu. When you do go, get the hotel to give you a busness card as not all the Taxi's know where the hotel is. A good plan is to print off the address even before you arrive as the taxi from the airport (92TL) may not know the hotel. It is a comfortable enough hotel, the rooms being a little smaller than most I have stayed in, even though most of the rooms are non-smoking if you get a room that is a bit smokey, complain straight away and there is a good chance you will get upgraded. The hotel is not heavily booked, so you shouldn't have a problem getting a room, but don't try and book in the hotel as they will only charge you the full rate. Discounts can easily be obtained on-line (booking.com, etc). ATM machines are just outside the hotel, and a hardware store 50m right out of the hotel has adaptors for just about every plug. Breakfast is included in the rate, and was very good, lots of cheeses and breads to choose from, but for those looking for the full English breakfast, you will be disappointed. The hotel food I am told is also of a high standard, but I didn't try it. There are restaurants not that far away, a 10 minute walk to the local shopping centre (ask for directions to Ikea) will find enough good quality International places to eat (and a starbucks for a coffee that doesn't silt up). For those adventurous types, turn right out of the hotel, turn left at the traffic lights and walk up to the top of the hill for a group of Turkish restaurants. Do not expect an English menu, or any English to be spoken, but you will get meal for the price of a couple of beers in the hotel.
Other things: In room safe, Gym is not in then hotel, but only a 2 minute (max) walk and is free (includes pool), super hot showers, TV channels are mainly in Turkish, and free 5am wakeup call from the local mosque.

Room Tip: Complain of shokey room and you might get an upgrade

I have stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and find it good for the reason that it is good value for money. Hotel is situated in the Asian part of the city and that is why it might be a problem for people who’s main goal is to have sightseeing and shopping because all these located in European part. It took me quit long time to go to old city and Taksim district, however the primary objective was business trip and it was great to have a walk to office.

Just back from a conference at this hotel and stayed four nights there.

Firstly the hotel is on the Asian side of the City (opposite from airport) and took over 2 1/2 hours to get there, even though it is only about 18 miles from airport. It took some other attendees 4 hours. All due to the vast amount of traffic on the roads.

The hotel is a modern building in an old part of the City, with apartments, supermarkets and food take away / restaurants aimed mainly for locals. There are no shops targeting locals, that I could find.

Check in was fine, though we were told to go our rooms and the cases would be brought up. I wondered how they would do this as there were 6 of us checking in at the same time and they did not, which luggage belonged to who. After waiting 45 mins I went to the reception and found my luggage with the others by the lift!

Rooms are good size with TV, tea making, expensive mini bar, free water and separate bath room. The shower is in the bath and is quite difficult to get in and out of. I can imagine anyone with any mobility issues may able to get in/out of bath.

The screen in the bath does not stop the shower water soaking the floor.
,
I was on the fourth floor and there were 2 lifts and stair cases.

The rooms all look on to a central sitting area.

The food was all buffet style and plenty of it and whilst I am a fussy eater, I found it adequate, though in a 4* hotel I would expect a menu and to be served at my table.

There is an open plan bar beside the dining room and had local bottled beer, wine and range of spirits. The drinks are slightly dearer than UK prices.

Conference facilities were fine, though no conference packs and often not enough milk provided for coffee breaks.

There is nothing around the hotel of particular interest to tourists and is mainly locals.

There is a large shopping centre a short taxi ride from the hotel and this has a lot of quality modern local shops and restaurants.

There is also a nearby mosque and the call for prayers can be heard throughout the hotel, with the first call at 5.40am!

Lovely modern hotel but in the wrong location. I do not imagine that I will stay in this hotel again.

I arrived late due to the usual awful Istanbul traffic. Nearly two hours from the AIrport, but I was told that it was normally an hour.

Free upgrade to a suite on the fifth floor which was fantastic, with a walk around balcony, Jacuzzi and loads of floor space.

A Smoking room, but didn't smell of cigarettes so no problem.

The Bar and restaurant was completely empty (on a Thursday) and completely devoid of atmosphere, but the meal I had was well presented, cooked beautifully and very reasonable. It's just a shame the drinks waitress managed to forget my drink even though I was the only customer in the Bar or restaurant.

I'd have liked to go out to eat I think, but the weather was terrible, and so was the location (or at least felt like it).

There's a minaret near (it's Istanbul after all), so unless you have earplugs or are a heavy sleeper, expect to be woken up by it at 6am.

Room Tip: Try and get an upgrade to the fifth floor.

Let's start with the bad:

I will agree with other reviewers that the hotel is in a terrible location, and I had to point the way using Google Maps twice, coming by taxi from the airport.

The rooms have quite a small TV (17"?) with a very limited selection of English-speaking channels. I only found three, and of those, BBC World was unwatchable due to the bad reception. CNN & CNBC-E remained. So bring some movies on your laptop, if you are travelling alone.

Now for the good sides.
I've stayed here three times for business, due to proximity to customer, and the first time I got a very cramped single room (2014). No room for a desk, even. The second time, the room was bigger (1010) and had both an armchair and a desk. On my third stay, I was offered the small room again, but when I asked kindly for a bigger room, I was told that they were full out of singles so I was upgraded to a double! Plenty of space, and a sofa, at no extra charge. Very good service.

The health club is not attached to the hotel, but located in the residential area behind it, quite close. The staff were happy to show the way. It is VERY well-equipped, featuring lots of workout machines and two indoor swimming pools and two outdoor ones, the latter closed during winter. There are also hamam and sauna facilities for both men and women.

Concerning location, I would not say that there is NOTHING in the area. You can find some decent restaurants if you walk up the hill a few blocks, but nothing "upscale". Definitely worth it if you grow tired of the hotel menu, though. Two supermarkets and a small convenience store are within a one-block radius if you need refreshments. The area is quite safe to walk around, but watch out for speeding minibuses when crossing the busy street outside! There are three ATM machines across the street in case you forget to withdraw taxi money at the airport. The nearby Meyden shopping center has a food court with some more fast-food oriented fare.

The breakfast has a fair selection of hot&cold Turkish cuisine, and a "continental" selection, but as is common in Turkey there is no ham or bacon. Plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, though. Nothing spectacular, but nothing missing either.

The room was nice and quiet, and I had few disturbances from the outside. AC unit was switched off during winter and would only cool.
The room was very warm on arrival due to the towel dryer running full throttle. I had to use a philips screwdriver to turn it down, and the next day the room temperature was fine.

I experienced no problems with room amenities or cleanliness, everything was up to my standard, but nothing was out of the ordinary either. The rooms have a modern design and are not too worn with use.

Room Tip: The nearby mosque's muezzin would sometimes wake me at morning prayer (6 AM), so light sleepers...
