Pros:
- Central location close to sights, restaurants and transport.
- The whole hotel was recently renovated with an upmarket feel.
- Very friendly and welcoming staff.
- Rooms are quiet despite the very busy location.
- Great facilities (modern pool, jaccuzi and a small gym)
Cons:
- Breakfast variety and quality were very poor, especially when compared to Romance's older sister hotel (Yaşmak Sultan). It was being served in a fairly limited space on the ground floor, unlike most neighbouring hotels which make use of the roof views.

The location is the best! Plus, I couldn't believe the varied and plentifull breakfast and the beautiful hotel with comfy beds, top cleanliness and great attention from the staff for such small price.

Room tip: for a darker room, choose a room with only one side to the street Instead of the corner rooms

When I booked this hotel it was rated number 3 out of 1,200+ hotels in Istanbul. Since it was not cheap by Istanbul standards, the expectations were set high. This review is based on that context.

Starting with some good points. The hotel is well located, being walking distance to many attractions and possibly a bit too close to the tram lime. The staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive whilst the room’s small balcony was a rare find for a city hotel. In the basement is a pool, Turkish bath, sauna and steam room (all included). This was a great escape from the intensity of Istanbul’s heat and hustle.

What I am about to write next will seem like nitpicking and if it was just one or two things it would be overlooked. However, given the relative price (150 Euros) and ranking on Trip Advisor, the number of annoyances was surprising. What makes it worse is that most of these issues are a result of design and management choices that seem unnecessary.
At check in, you are required to sign a second document which has a long list of rules and conditions. The rules themselves are fine, but most hotels have a better way of handling this rather than making it feel like you are a naughty child signing into a boarding school.
After check in, you’ll be given a room number that starts with 4. Almost all multi-storey hotels have the first number meaning the floor, but in this hotel here every room starts with 4, so don’t head to the fourth floor. Apart from this being a bad omen for Chinese visitors (4 is unlucky), the reason for the numbers is that this is the fourth hotel in the area owned by the same group. As a guest, it has little benefit. This is the first encounter of some weird design over practicalities.

The room itself is generally good. However on the lower floors if you have the balcony doors open, you can expect the smell of smokers from a metre or two below to waft through your room. This isn’t great, especially since one of the rules you sign on the spate document at check in is that you’ll be charged a cleaning fee if you smoke in your room (which is fair) except that to take advantage of the balcony on the lower floors your room will often smell of smokers anyway. Also, I was on the balcony one day and a restaurant spruiker from the lane just kept trying to get me to come to the restaurant – that’s how low the balconies can be. The restaurant is called Blu and is best avoided. There are plenty of better choices nearby.

Inside the standard room you can be expected to be confused by overly-complicated light switches where some turn lights on and off while others change the level of brightness. It’s a bit of a guess each time. For some reason the hotel installed block out curtains that are not wide enough to cover the window, so you’ll get 2 or 3 bright vertical light shafts coming through very early in the morning. And extra 30cm of curtain would have solved this problem.

The worst aspect of the room is the entire bathroom design. The bathroom is mainly floor-to-ceiling glass walls to the room with a thin fabric curtain providing modest privacy. In our case the door didn’t close easily so you ended up banging it if you wanted it closed. It meant if you go to the bathroom at night, not only will the noise probably wake your partner but turning on the bathroom light will cast a bright glow through the thin curtains and over the bed. The glass walls also mean there is just one hook right next to the shower to hang towels and robes, which can maybe hold one, two with difficulty. A small towel rack can only then be positioned over the toilet, not an ideal place. The fabric curtains also keep trap the moisture so it always feels damp. A pair of washed socks were still very damp after 3 days, and they normally take 24 hours to dry in other hotels. Finally there is the extremely annoying taps. For some unknown reason, they decided to have the hot and cold taps operate in opposite directions. At first you may think the tap is jammed and other times you spray yourself thinking you are turning the tap off, when in fact you are turning it on full. Needless to say, getting the right temperature in the shower is a tedious process as you are not sure which way to turn each tap to adjust the temperature.

The worst aspect of these problems is that they were deliberately put in by design. They serve no benefit to guests, but just constant annoyances because someone though they would be ‘cool’.

As I said this generally sounds like nitpicking but as a guest in a highly ranked hotel, you expect things to generally go smoothly, not be a frequent fight against poor design.

Room tip: If you want to enjoy a balcony, get a high floor as smoke will waft in from the lane below
