We were on a tour and went here with 5 other tour members. The phrase "family fast food" applies to restaurants that have many dishes ready to mix or cook with other ingredients, so it's fast food, but not quite.
The dishes that we had were very good, prices were reasonable, and service (they brought the food to your table) was very good.
Restaurant is in the Taksim Square area, so easily within walking distance, and since there so many shops close by, makes it very nice walk during the evening.

Thiis was so good, we went twice.
Its a canteen style restaurant : pick up your tray, move along and point to what you want ! simple.
Staff speak enought english to guide you and prices are clearly marked.
Lunch for 2 of us with 3 mains, salad, drinks was a bargain 19tl.
Be adventurous and order things to share and try !
we love the yogourt with vegetables, chicken casserole, stuffed vineleaves.....in fact all very good. fresh every day - high turnover - always a good sign.
Sit and local watch ! we raised a few eyebrows as its not perhaps used a lot by tourists.

a good way to sample turkish food varieties, which are deliciously laid out in a wide spread over a wide area. have the dishes with rice or potatoes. desserts available too. english speaking staff helps with knowing what you are selecting and they are helpful with suggestions too. credit cards accepted. ask for cay - its free.

My boyfriend and I called this place "The Pumpkin", by the big orange pumpkin that decorated the restaurant's window. During our 10 days visit to Istanbul this spring, we ate at Afacan 3 times. It doesn't say enough?

OK, then I'll tell you that it's a self service restaurant with very polite staff (who speak English pretty good by the way) and a great food.

Everything we tried was colorful and tasty. I don't know the names of any dishes, but they had everything - for vegetarians and those who love meat, salads, pasta, sauces, desserts, juices. My favorite was chocolate pudding - the best I tried in Istanbul, although I'm sure many will disagree on that cause everyone has their own favorite pudding shops in Istanbul. We never spent more than around 30,00YTL for the two of us, and we ate a lot, and I mean really a lot, as we did everywhere else in Istanbul.

The place is decorated like some small restaurants in American movies from the 60s. Newspaper clips about food under the table glass are quite an interesting touch (too bad they were in Turkish, but maybe it only added to the charm). Toilet was clean, although a bit small, but I noticed this is a standard in Istanbul.

We got a free apple tea after the meal, served by a cute waiter, who said it was "for his friends". It is a cliche maybe, but a charming one, I have to admit.

I would definitely recommend everyone to try this place.
