This legendary restaurant is "the" place to eat once you are around Üsküdar district. If you plan to have a long lunch or dinner, this would be a wrong choice. Consider this place as a fast food type of restaurant for traditional turkish cuisine. Utmost 30 to 45 minutes will be more than enough here. Don't expect kebabs, here you will find authentic Turkish meals as still cooked at homes of Turkish people. You can choose your meals from the menu or from the displays at the entrance and nearby the kitchen. The decoration does not have anything fancy. The service is based on speed, not customer satisfaction. The food is extremely delicious... Especially the "paça" soup (made of lambs' legs) is spectacular, the best in Istanbul... The restaurant does not worth a special visit but should not be missed either in case you are at this part of the town.

I wish I could have eaten here more than once, and/or with more people, to try more items from the expansive menu. Both things I had (hamsi pilav -- that is, fresh anchovies baked over rice -- and white beans) were delicious. The hamsi pilav was especially great -- really different from any rice dish I've ever had. I could see that everything else is probably great too

And you can literally see everything. Cold items, including many desserts, are kept in glass cases in the front of the restaurant, while hot items are displayed via a window into the kitchen area. Even if you don't speak Turkish, it's not hard to get exactly what you want. Note that they accept only cash (my meal cost a reasonable 22 TL).

Atmosphere is like what you'd imagine from a 1933-vintage popular restaurant -- lots of polished steel and chrome plus those old glass cases and waiters wearing white aprons. It is not an elegant place, but it is very clean, with modern rest rooms.

As a local person, it's my favorite if I'm around. I certainly suggest if you are after Turkish tastes. Actually its dishes are almost like what is cooked at home. You can find meals a little bit oily if not accustomed. But if you're strolling on foot, you'll need energy. If you're in Uskudar, don't think any other option. A vegetable meal with meat plus a dish of mixed olive oily cold meals, and of course a mixed dish of deserts. Prices are reasonable though they accept only cash. You'll find most of the staff old, because they've been there for a long time.
Just go there and make your stomach happy. It's just 200m from center (bus stops and ferry). Then take a short walk by the sea to see Kız Kulesi (The Maiden's Tower) from Anatolian shore. That will help you to burn that calories.
