“Beautiful hotel, but too far away”
Reviewed August 16, 2008

We stayed at the Sumahan for 2 nights in Aug 08. It is a very beautiful hotel, with stunning views of the Bosphorus and the private boat service that ferrys the hotel's guest from the hotel and downtown is indeed a very stylish touch - however it is just too far away!

The boat service is very good and efficient when it runs (30 mins between hotel and downtown). However the last service ends before dinner time - and if one misses the hotel boat its either an expensive taxi trip back (most likely with traffic jams along the way) or it will involve a ferry ride + taxi connection.

Anyhow - overall a very enjoyable experience particularly if you are looking for a designer hotel!

The hotel has a beautiful location, excellent structures and service.
Being on the eastern side of the Bosphur is very pleasant, at the end of the day, to leave the noise of the old town and to sail back (by the hotel's boat).
The management is extremly friendly and welcoming.

It was our first time in Istanbul. And we were pleasantly suprised.
Much more sophisticated than expected.

The hotel was good... very boutique where things look good but are not every time practical.

We booked a family room ( duplex) and we spent all our time telling our 3 year old daughter not to use the stairs... leathal for a child.

The room servicce was very good and quick.
BUT do not try the Kodron restaurant.. very stuffy ( unless you like having 5 waiters watching you eat at the end of your table!).
The staff barely understood English and they serve very spicy food to our child. And she loves arabic food!!!
AND the prices are way too expensive .... we ate at the Four seasons an excellent meal at half the price. Bad experience all the way that left a big hole in our pocket.

The hotel staff was pleasant. Just right.

As for going to Istanbul, do use the public boat ( 5-10 min from the hotel) with a much more flexible timetable ( at the boat only leaved once in the morning and come back once in the afternoon).

All in all , good hotel with fantastic view. Not top level quality, but good.

It was everything we expected and more!
The room was absolutely gorgeous, extremely tasteful and comfortable. The view was breathtaking! We found ourselves just staring at the giant ships passing through the Bosphorus during the day or gazing at the lighted bridge at night. Two French doors were leading to a little garden, with the room located just 20m from the waterfront.
The staff were extremely attentive and helpful, though the boat service is too scarce. We recommend using the public ferry, located just twenty minutes walk from the hotel with a more reasonable schedule.
We didn't try the hotel restaurant as the area has so many great places to eat. However, don't miss the hammam experience!
It was one of the best romantic getaways we ever had!

My husband and I stayed at the Sumahan for the first week of our fabulous two-week Turkish honeymoon. It was a wonderful choice, and after months of research of properties in Istanbul, I'm so glad we chose the Sumahan.

A word of caution - make sure you realize, when booking this hotel, that it is not centrally located to all the sightseeing attractions in Istanbul. If you prefer to be in the "center of the action", stay in Sultanahmet. If you're looking for a quiet retreat at the end of a busy day, the Sumahan is an excellent choice.

We booked a standard room and were very happy with it. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom huge and well-appointed, and we arrived home every day to find a bowl of fresh fruit on our table. The best part of the room were the windows, which flung wide to a breathtaking view of the Bosphorus, and allowed the sounds of waves lapping at the coast to enter the room at all hours.

The staff was very friendly and helpful at all times, and even though we found the hotel's boat to be rather superfluous (it doesn't take you where you need to go, and doesn't go anywhere at convenient times), the local Cengelkoy ferry station was just a short walk down the road, and once we figured out the ferry schedule, we were good to go - the ferries were easy, convenient and cheap, and will take you right to Eminonu, where you can board the tram to Sultanahmet. And you get to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Bosphorus at the same time! We found that all the public transportation in Istanbul is easy to use and inexpensive.

The cafe at the restaurant serves decent food, but it is VERY pricey. The breakfast is extensive and delicious, and they will make you eggs upon request.

The Sumahan is a great place for a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of Istanbul - at the end of our trip, we spent a night in Sultanahmet. It was nice, but if I went back to Istabul, I wouldn't hesitate to book the Sumahan again.

We had a fantastic stay in this hotel. We stayed in one of the suites, which had a beautiful view across, up and down the bosphorus. The suites have patio doors onto the lawn, which goes down to the water edge. We ate breakfast each day outside on the water edge. The bosphorus is within a few metres of the suite and there is so much going on you can just sit there and watch the world go by.
The food was excellent - not the wide variety you would get in a big central city hotel but simple tasty local produce prepared and served well.
The suite itself was spacious and had excellent facilities. Several people have commented that the hotel is some way from the old part of Istanbul - yes it is but its great fun to get to the old city either by the hotel boat and then either bus taxi or tram or to walk about 200m to the local ferry station. You can then experience real life on the ferry at a cost of about 50 pence (1$) for the trip right into the old city.
Next to the hotel and on the edge of the Bosphorus is a fish restaurant where we ate several times. The starters were superb and overall the food excellent.
We had no issues with the service levels - staff were discrete but there when needed.
Istanbul is a great place but watch out for taxi drivers and all the stallholders - they will rip you off given the chance. If you look around and barter enough there are bargains to be had.

Overall a great fun time.

On the asian side of Turkey. Perfect if you have time to spend crossing the bosphorous river in the morning to the european side about 20 min. One of the best hotel experiences I had. Not very good english speaking crew.
