Sumahan on the Water
Ranked #195 of 1,163 Hotels in Istanbul
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 26, 2011

Just returned home from four nights at Sumahan on the Water. Agree with most of the reviews on Trip Advisor; the hotel is beautiful, luxurious, the staff are friendly and helpful etc. We had a loft room which was great and very spacious. Loved sitting outside our room, just by the river.

We spent most of our time visiting the tourist sights which meant taking the hotel ferry most mornings at 9:00am, which was a lovely way to start the day. We then took trams or buses to the sights, before returning to the hotel around 6:00pm by public ferry and bus. The Istanbul Pass is great. We got ours from reception and topped it up twice at the machines which are everywhere. We did need some help to top up the first time but a friendly local helped us when we were looking confused!

We sometimes took the hotel ferry again to go out in the evening, sometimes the public ferry. Note the timetable to Cengelkoy (only three minutes walk from the hotel) only runs during ’rush hour’. We used this one morning when we wanted to get into town early. Yes, the ferries finish before midnight, but we never had a problem getting a taxi, which are cheap by UK standards.

Rooms were great and staff were pleasant.
Right on the river and great views of the European side. And if there is a problem it is that – the location. Traffic is Istanbul is not great and while cabs are cheap and plentiful, you will need to leave early to get to that restaurant booking on the European side and it is a long way back to the hotel after a evening out. The hotel’s boat is great and easy on and off, water taxi’s are expensive and bit more challenging. Shame the hotel boat doesn’t run more frequently or later. Note if you expect to use the hotel boat back from the European side make sure you have booked/confirmed it.

The public ferry is fun, but the last back is at 23.30hrs.

Best tip: Get an Istanbul card – it’s like the oyster card in London- and you can use it on boat, tram, bus or metro.

We stayed at The Sumahan on our return to Istanbul, at the end of our trip before heading home. This turned out to be perfect; things are quieter on the Asian side, but that was ok for us as we had already seen all of the sights in the old town and on the European side in our first go-round. The hotel is smack on the shores of the Bosphorus and all of the serene rooms have amazing views of the water and the bridge (and fireplaces if its cold enough, we were there in warm weather). The staff is very professional, discrete and helpful. The hotel has its own restaurant with a patio right on the water, a full-service spa/hammam, and to cap it off they also have a private boat (small!) that will take you across to the European side (there is also a regularly scheduled commuter ferry that lets off just down the block and which goes to the old city). All of that said, the hotel is on the expensive side and not the most convenient to the bulk of the tourist sites. Still, if its a quiet, luxurious waterside getaway you're looking for, and you don't mind hopping a boat to get to the action, this is certainly a lovely choice.

Room Tip: all rooms face the water.

We were concerned staying on the Asian side of Istanbul might hinder our experience, however, we were surprised what an amazing decision it was! Upon our arrrival the staff was nothing but hospitable and friendly. Service was fantastic and efficient. Not one request went unfullfilled and always with a smile! The views were breathtaking, the suites were sleek and roomy. Delicious food and perfect private Turkish bath to finish the day! How luxurious to retire back to the Sumahan after a hectic and bustling day on the European side! Thank you to all who made this one of the most amazing trips ever! You will find your slice of heaven at the Sumahan!

With all the special qualities of the Asian Istanbul, this hotel shares a wonderful atmosphere with guests. Loft rooms are excellent in comfort and view to the Bosphorus, seagulls come across the windows to make you feel you're floating in a boat. Although the staff were doing their best, but they could not meet all the requirements of the fine service you would expect from such a place, in terms of communication (language) and late room service.

This hotel has been restored very well. Located on the Bosphorous, you get a truly unique view of Turkey. Because we spent our initial 3 days in the city, we wanted to have another experience of staying by the Bosphorous.

As we had already visited most of the sites in the old city whilst we stayed there, we used the Sumahan to venture into the other areas of Istanbul. There's a free of charge private ferry which takes you to the other side. Upon arriving on the other side, the city trams are very convenient.

Logistics out of the way, the in room breakfast was fantastic. Being able to eat breakfast in your room, overlooking the ships travelling to and thru on the Bosphorous is truly memorable. Rooms are well appointed and an added bonus was having a Turkish Haman in house. Managed to have a massage - which was mediocre but then I am comparing techniques and training to Asia.

Overall, a wonderful stay and indeed unique.

Each time I stay here the experience only gets better.
The location might take a little getting used to if you have never been to Istanbul before, but the views are worth it, and once you know how to navigate the Bosphorus being on the Asian shore is no problem. Just make a few plans and get used to jumping on and off ferry boats and into taxis - it all becomes part of the romance of being in Istanbul.
It's the staff though that make staying here so good. They really do work hard to make everything run smoothly from the moment you arrive - when a refreshing drink is delivered whilst you relax and unwind in the beautiful library that overlooks the Bosphorous.
Even the least expensive room is perfectly equipped, and comes complete with a luxurious marble bathroom. If you want the full Turkish experience then there is a spa with Hamam in the basement. I can recommend the swedish massage - perfect way to relax at the end of a long day.
