“Expensive for rather basic accommodation - disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

The twin room which we had was very small and as we stayed for 5 days in July we found ourselves very cramped. The owners do try to give you a lot of information on arrival which we found rather over the top. Generally we also found that the staff working there not that friendly. The breakfast was just about okay, but not a lot to eat and not a lot of variety. The area in which it is situated is however fantastic, as it is in a friendly side street where you see all the local people and at the same time it is near to the Blue Mosque and many of the other sites. But I would not recommend the 'hotel', as I I know that you can find better facilities elsewhere for a lower price.

We stayed in this pension for a night in September. Simply cannot understand why other reviews are so enthusiastic. Our booked twin room was absolutely tiny, furniture was poor and basic sub-Ikea style, holes in sheet, no view, bathroom minuscule, overall feeling of being cramped as breakfast was served in small lobby opening on to narrow alley. We had our differences with the very uptight manager after he refused to switch us to another vacant and larger room the following morning and we decided to check out ... we were still charged for the second night we had reserved through booking.com so be warned that this is policy. Paid a rate of 75 euro. Subsequently found a 25 square metre penthouse room elsewhere with a spectacular view of Istanbul and water, plus use of rooftop terrace for 80 euro a night (a turning up on the doorstep deal at delightful Hotel Poem). That was lucky but there was any amount of better accommodation than Ahmet Efendi Evi available in the area, including rooftop terraces. "Boutique" description of Ahmet Efendi Evi would be hilarious if it was not so annoying: a big black mark from us.

We do respect our guests views and opinions, unfortunately this review does contain some untrue facts. The guests booked a twin room via a website that shows the room size and it simple decoration, upon arrival the guests wanted a double room instead of the twin room with a larger shower that will fit two people, which unfortunately we do not have. At the discretion of the member of staff at the time they were offered another room that they used for few hours and asked to be given the original room they booked and if it was possible to be allocated the family room that wasn't available at that time.
We do our up-most to please all our guests and we do fail with some extreme demanding guests.

The location of the hotel is perfect : the metro is close by, most of the places to see such as : Topkapi palace, blue mosque, aya sofia. There are many nice restaurants in the vicinity. So the best thing about this hotel is its location.
Yosuf, the manager is great, he is very helpful and makes you feel comfortable, by providing accurate information.
The rooms are small, but cosy and the lighting is good. Also the place was very clean. The bathrooms seemed a little small for us.
But overall a good experience.

Hotel is about a 8 minute walk from the Blue Mosque and past the Touristy Hotel/Restaurant street.
Mehdi was there to great us when we arrived. He sat us down and gave us a brief history lesson on Istanbul and Turkey - very interesting.
He then gave us a great plan for what we could do during the next 2 days.

Trust his recommendations, cos he knows what he is talking about.
He recommended a great place for lunch (just down the road, government owned, great food at very reasonable prices!)
Mehdi also recommended the yummiest restaurant. It was on the roof top of the Orient Express Hotel called Imbat. One of the best meals we had in Turkey - and we had alot of meals!
Highly recommended and rightfully holds the Tripadvisor award for Best Hotel 2012.

finding such a kind of accomodation in Sultanamet is becoming very rare:
the place is located in a little alleway 5 mins walking from Aya Sofia and is very well runned.
feeling is like being visiting friends
rooms are quite spacious and well organized (air conditiong, fridge, tv and very usefull hangings and shelfs were to put your belongings)
owner can give you all support and information you need and is always very happy to chat with you
breakfast, served in ground floor common area, includes tea, fresh bread, fruit juice, muesly, yogurt, tomatoes, marmelade, cucumbers, cheese and more.
the area is very local and delicius fish locanta is just opposite
shower could be improved removing unusefull shower courtain and putting a shower box
over all i can say that now i have discovered this place for sure i will come back in my further Istanbul trip.
grat options considering very low price

Room Tip: avoid small ground floor twin bed room

This guest house was in a good location, in the back strees behind the Blue Mosque. Its probably a little too far from the main sites if you have mobility problems or like to be in the middle of the action. We stayed in the family room, which was small and basic (shower only, no bath) with two small connected rooms - although only one had air conditioning (the other had a fan).

The breakfast was continental, with a medium selection of Turkish foods, which did not change over the 5 days. The bread was fresh and boiled eggs were nice, although the small breakfast area means that servings are at 8, 9 and 10 am and lateness or dilly dallying are frowned upon. Apart from a very nice welcome, we found the service rather unsmiling.

There was free wifi, which is nice, although the signal is pretty weak. My main complaint is that there was no table and chairs, or desk in either room, which gets difficult when you are there for 5 days and trying to so some work/study or feed/entertain the kids. My main suggestion would be to replace the large ornament cupboard (no function in a very small room) with a desk and chair or small table.

We visited at the end of Ramadan and it was lovely to see all the celebrations, but the crowds were enormous and the lines for all the key sites very long. If you aren't travelling to celebrate Eid, I would suggest another time of the year. I must say the town council for Sultanahmet did a great job of managing the crowds and the trash, and put on good concerts and events.

This boutique hotel is a little jewel in the old city of Istanbul, a lovely, welcoming place where they genuinely care for their guests.
The intimate, delicious Turkish breakfast is a good start of every day.The rooms are quiet and very clean. The Blue Mosque, the Aya Sofia, it is all nearby. They like to give you any information about the history, culture or sights of Istanbul you would like to have and are are always there when you need something. When you step out of the door you are in the midst of a sparkling Istanbul.
Go there and have a wonderful experience!

Monique
