“Highly Recommended Hotel in Istanbul”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

Just come back from Istanbul.

The Megara Palace Hotel in Sultan Ahmed exceeded all my expectations.

The hotel is ideally located, just a few minutes walk away from the most of the attractions in this area. The rooms are clean and comfortable . The service from all the staff is very friendly and efficient. Rooms are, as expected, serviced every day. The dining room is located on the top floor with a terrace that has a magnificent view over the Bosphorus. We had breakfast included, very good variety of fresh foods. In my opinion this hotel is well worth the money spent and I would recommend it to anybody.

Stayed five nights with three other friends and all had separate rooms which were clean and certainly adequate. The young lady in the roof restaraunt and the staff on reception were extremely helpful. The Owner seemed a little pushy in respect of who to use for boat trips and taxis to the airport. We got a taxi back to the airport from right outside the hotel (where they stand) to the airport for 20 euros as apposed to 35 euros he had quoted us. As long as you are aware of this the Megara Palace is very nice friendly place to stay.

Room Tip: If you are given a room you do not like ask the staff and if another is available you will be moved.

POSITIVE
- Can’t beat the location. 2-3 mins walk to Haghia Sofia and Topkaki Palace; and 6-8 mins to the Cistern Basilica and Blue Mosque. Although close to all this attractions it’s located in a quiet street.
- Friendly and helpful staff.
- Free wi-fi in the whole hotel. The connection was fast but not very stable.

NEGATIVE
- Small rooms, but big enough for a short stay and small luggage.
- Breakfast with limited and basic choice, although enough to get you started.
- outdate and worn out furniture.
- Bathroom smelled badly.
- Borderline cleanliness – overall it was not dirty but still it didn’t look like they payed particular attention to this issue.

CONCLUSIONS
It’s an ok hotel for a short stay (especially if you do not have much time in Istanbul and would like to visit the main attractions in the old city by foot and in a relaxed manner). However it is a bit overpriced for the overall quality and service (40 EUR a night for a double room in the low season seemed excessive for what we got).

TIPS
- Expect to pay 40 TL for the taxi from Ataturk Airport to the hotel. If you have the time (and not carrying much luggage) you can take the metro (which is infinitely cheaper). The closest metro station to the hotel is Sultanahmet (close to the Blue Mosque) and it will take you 6-8 minutes by foot (maybe a bit longer with luggage) to get there. Then you just have to change lines at Aksaray and get the line that goes straight to the airport. The total metro trip takes about 30 minutes.

Pros: the hotel is in a great location - it is minutes away from all the key attractions of Istanbul such as The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Haghia Sophia. The beds in the hotel were also relatively good - we slept pretty well throughout the entire trip.

Cons: the staff at the hotel are dodgy and untrustworthy. The gentleman with the white hair who works during the day is constantly trying to sell you something - a tour or some show in the city. Whenever you exit or enter the hotel, you are asked to purchase something, which is not a relaxing way to spend a vacation!

We would also recommend that you avoid the restaurant in the hotel at all costs. We ate there once (after much pressure from the staff!) and the waiter (who is also the doorman) charged us 82 Turkish liras for a very modest meal. The prices on the menu are inexplicably a mixture of liras and euros. Thus, when you get the final bill, you never know how they have calculated the total since their prices are in both currencies. If you want a great meal at a reasonble, go to the Aloran Restaurant just a few minutes' walk away. Also, on our final day, as we were coming in for the evening, the waiter/doorman sprinted up the stairs and stood at our door angling for a tip. It was very uncomfortable and awkward!

If you want to get laundry done, the woman down the street will do it cheaply. Do not give it to the staff, for they quoted us a price much higher than hers just to walk it there and back.

Finally, our room smelled musty throughout our stay. We noticed some rotting wood on the bottom of the bathroom doors. See photos attached. Also, the fridge in the room did not work.

We stayed in megara during the low season in February. The staff were very helpful, I never felt pressure to pay tips but instead they were very helpful out of their own goodwill. We met the owner several times and he was very friendly and welcoming. Although there is no elevator, the staff bring the luggage to the rooms. The breakfast is very good and clean. Don't expect a million choices but the most important things are there. The bread is beautiful and you can have some Turkish tea. The rooms have a comfortable duvet and is warm but not scalding and you can see the sea and some of the old city walls from the hotel. It is extremely close to topaki palace and is relatively close to the blue mosque and Hagia Sophia as well as ayasophia hamami (Turkish bath). Try Aloran restaurant nearby, it's really yummy. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit istanbul.

This hotel is small, cosy, clean and tidy. The staff are wonderful, friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is plentiful, tasty with wide variety and the view is to live for. I travel solo, so I did not like the twin-bed room, so I was placed in another room, easily.
The area is vibrant with lots of shopping, mosques, anything you need in a vibrant city.
It was 0 degrees outside and the rooms were warm and beds comfortable - a great place to stay.
