Great food, helpful and friendly staff, cool atmosphere and reasonable prices - what's not to like?! A little gem - I highly recommend.

After visiting Taksim square, our group was wandering downhill, headed int he general direction of our hotel. Others in the group wanted to stop, well, anywhere, but my husband, who was directing us homeward, really wanted a good meal after a few mediocre ones. After nixing a few other places, we happened upon this small restaurant. It looked very inviting and had various meals that appealed to everyone, plus a promising wine list (important for my husband and I). Some of the staff don't really speak English, while one waitress spoke enough that we could communicate enough. Regardless, the staff were cheerful and efficient. We were so glad we picked this place. It was the best meal that we had while we were in Istanbul, and we had a lovely (albeit rather expensive) bottle of wine as well. I definitely recommend this restaurant.
This new restaurant in Cihangir (has been open for a little more than a month) is absolutely lovely. It is owned by two chefs and the menu is designed with thought and care. We live across the street and have by now visited every restaurant / bar in Cihangir. The Alchemist has hands down the best and most creative food in this area, accompanied by warm and attentive service.
There is not a bad or even average dish at this place, but some of our favorites include:
- Mushroom bruschetta
- Eggplant and mozzarella
- Lamb with bulghur
- Tabouleh salad
- Bean salad
- Seafood stew
- Chocolate soufflé
They also have a nice wine and cocktail selection. I particularly love that they have mulled wine (great in the winter!). The décor is very chic, yet cozy, and they have nicely heated outdoor tables.
The best part for me is the service. Every customer is greeted with a smile and they really make you feel like family at the Alchemist.
Finally, for the quality of food, the prices at this restaurant are an absolute steal. If you're coming from the United States or Europe, you will be shocked at how little you pay for this quality of food -- it is like eating at a Michelin star restaurant at diner-level prices!
Do not miss this place if you're staying in Beyoglu and it is likewise well worth the trip from Sultanhamet, Besiktas, or wherever else you happen to be. You won't regret it!
