the museum is tiny. unless you really love art, you will easy walk through the whole place very slowly within an hour. it is 15LTR to get in, which is a lot of money for what it is. i dont really rate the art either.

Ist Modern is a wonderful museum located on a spectacular site (view of the Bosphorus) in 'New Istanbul' The gallery compares to any top rate modern art museum in Europe or North America, from an 'interesting, engaging' art perspective and features a number of (lesser known to non-turks) Turkish (and world) artists from the 1960s to present. It is extremely easy to get to on the public tram (figure this out if you haven't already -- 1.50 Lira, clean easy and much safer and faster than any taxi ride) then walk 2 blocks to the location. Have tea (or a meal) at the lovely restaurant on the water. Once you are in the new city, there are any number of other great attractions (recommend the Pera museum and nearby culinary institute for a fabulous, cheap lunch) and you can take any any number of shopping , or non shopping very interesting turkish streets. A must see for anyone with an interest in art!

Ok, I'll be a snob. I went to the Istanbul Modern reluctantly...how interesting, I thought, could modern Turkish art be? Turns out, pretty interesting. I was surprised and delighted by how much I enjoyed the collection. Some lovely older (turn of the century) pieces as well as some great, fresh more modern Turkish pieces. The museum was something of a revelation and a good guide to some of the artistic currents flowing through modern Turkish culture. I wouldn't say it is a must see, but if you are an art lover and enjoy modern art, it certainly is worth your time.
