The new location of the museum is in the historical neighborhood, Pera. The neighborhood hosted many artist studios duch as Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu.
The new building is smaller then the original location, so it does limit a bit the possibility to expose the works in a spatious way.
The permanent collection and exhibitions are interesting, very well curated.
A break from the historical sites can be had in this museum for modern art. Depicts local as well as foreign artists and has special showings. Guided tour is recommended to make the most of the pieces. The museum is under renovation and hence have a temp place located off Galata. Air conditioned, with a cafe and a good tourist shop.
Some really incredible pieces in here, each room was well curated. Good gender balance across the featured artists, which is always a plus!
It’s about 50:50 split between the permanent collection & temporary exhibits. Recommend starting at the top and working your way down.
Great selection in the museum shop too.

We visited Modern Istanbul on a spare day in the city and it turned out to be a highlight of our trip. The building is well laid out over multiple floors housing different exhibitions. What a great selection of photography, art and sculpture. A brilliant and engaging selection. We used the audio commentary too to get a further insight into the artwork and that was also great. If you like modern art, I highly recommend.
If you are visiting for a short while and do not have much time, this is the one museum you should see. There are contemporary arts, and sometimes special exhibitions. It also has the best cafe with the best Istanbul view, the food is divine, and you can view the historical peninsula from the terrace while you are eating.
