“Beautiful artwork”
Reviewed December 9, 2013

I was very impressed with the collection--fresh and vibrant. Very different from anything I've seen before.Very beautiful, mostly Turkish artists I believe. Also, it is not too big so it is not overwhelming. A must see for artists and art enthusiasts! Also, a good option for those who prefer to stay away from the hectic touristy sites.

Also, beautiful terrace on the water with a beautiful view of the Bosporus and Sultanahmet.

“Amazing, inspirational, as if you are in another world”
Reviewed December 9, 2013

Istanbul Modern is an absolute must see for anybody who might be just a little bit interested in art - and of course for the art lovers under us. The museum provides contemporary art and they change their exhibitions often. The exhibition which they have offer and which I saw is called "Past and Future" and is absolutely breathtaking. They state: Istanbul Modern’s new exhibition draws from its permanent collection to highlight the historical link to the past that art museums establish as sites of memory, and their role in shaping the future by their commitment to collecting and preserving works of art. This exhibition is very diverse according to me and a big inspiration. It is worth the entrance fee and also a few hours from your day.

“Up with the times”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

There is a great variety of works here. Some are really quite exciting in both execution and in the texture of their reference to the culture of Istanbul, such as the volcanic representation of destruction by fire of Ottoman houses captured in pvc mosaics. Others update tropes of Western art, such as the bathing nudes squiggled in repeated wallpaper-like fashion, or another that uses the bathing nude to pose the question of voyeurism in the context of the orientalist view of Turkish women's sexuality represented by ideas of the harem. Still others are more abstract and universal, such as one composition of mirrors artfully arranged to both to limit and liberate the viewer's vista. A lot of the works currently on show - including several video-based installations - assert women's sexuality against a background identified as repressive paternalism and identifiable if one wishes with the most conservative elements in Turkey's current ruling élite. The appeal of these works will perhaps depend on one's interest in and commitment to women's struggle for parity in modern Turkish society; but there is something here for everyone interested in contemporary art. The collection changes frequently (my wife was told some works she'd particularly liked on her last visit two years ago had moved on), and there is something for everyone, but you'll like it best if you're genuinely interested in the Istanbul and Turkish angle on contemporary ways of seeing. And one way of seeing we found difficult to manage was the view of the Bosphorus, as it was largely blocked by a gargantuan cruise ship tied up at the berth below. Recommended - but don't pay just to see the view!

“Breathtaking location”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

This museum is a little off the beaten path but a must see. The architecture and location on the Bosphorous are stunning. The art is contemporary and very good and the dining room is spectacular for coffee or a full meal. This was our favorite museum in Istanbul and worth a few hours.

“Lots to see, well worth the entrance fee”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

Great introduction to contemporary Turkish art, with detailed English descriptions. Took my time wandering around and, before I knew it, 2.5 hours had passed. No photos allowed.

Grab a tea and sit in the museum's outdoor cafe after your visit -- there's a terrific view of the water. (Food is pricey, though.)
