Not to be missed. While you are submerged in history, take a respite and visit the Museum. A great education is art and sculpture.

Yes, I'll admit it, modern art is not quite as bad as I thought all of my life up until our visit to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art this morning. Of course, there were those pictures that looked like a kindergarten class group project, but there was more than that too. In particular I was very impressed with many of the 3D displays. One was a mosaic of a shark in the ocean composed of clothing tags pinned and measuring something like 10 x 8 feet. Another was a sphere that reached from floor to ceiling made up of smaller one foot balls that were tied together and suspended by ropes anchored all the way around the room on the ceiling, walls, and floor. The roof in the library was designed by hanging books very close to each other from strings. I think my favorite was a collection of vintage suitcases, chairs, and artistic replicas with all sorts of movable, mounted magnifying glasses that provided many opportunities for new perspectives. I really enjoyed our visit.

Ticket: 15 TL

The works are well displayed with a lot of space. A lot of audiovisual works. Go for the art but plan to eat at the cafe for a unique view of Istanbul. The gift shop has very nice stuff and not expensive.

Spent the morning in this lovely museum looking at works from the late nineteenth century (a lot of Impressionist type paintings), to very recent years. The works are displayed in airy white spaces with room to sit and contemplate. Thursday is free for Turkish residents but the museum was not very busy - a quiet change from the crowds in the better known tourist spots in Istanbul. Great value at 8 Turkish lire for a senior.
