Wow, what a fantastic boutique hotel this is. A beautiful old exterior and totally modern inside. We were upgraded to a mezzanine suite with a Bosphorous view, so had a living room and shower room downstairs, then a bed and stand alone bath upstairs - very luxurious. It's position on the Bosphorous at Kanlica was perfect, with great views from most of the rooms, and of course from the lovely terrace. The included Turkish breakfast was a revelation with lots of pots of goodies (five different cheeses, olives, honey comb, dried apricots, cherries, clotted cream, borek etc) served on a tray - very generous portions.
This hotel is quite far out of town on the Asian side near the second Bosphorous bridge, which I knew as I'd lived in the city in the past. However, the journey from Ataturk airport only took about 50 minutes, even in rush hour and despite floods in the previous couple of days, because of the new motorway which bypasses the city centre. It shouldn't be too difficult to get back from town by taxi either though we didn't end up doing this. The hotel offers a boat across the Bosphorous if you want to go to the European side of the Bosphorous which was great, but most days we just took the dolmus to Uskudar for about 2.5 YTL and then got the public ferry to Eminonu for Sultan Ahmet or to Karakoy for Taksim. The area of Kanlica has a few restaurants, cafes serving yoghurt (Kanlica is famous for it's yoghurt) with honey, jam or icing sugar, and a small supermarket.
The reception staff were helpful and recommended a good, upmarket fish restaurant nearby. We also went to Hidiv Kasri, an old house which serves food and drink, which was about a 15 minute walk up a very steep hill from the hotel. The service was a bit patchy when we wanted anything out of the ordinary - long waits without much communication - but overall this is definitely a hotel worth staying at, especially if you are undaunted by having to get round on your own initiative.
