“Great Location...within walking distance to everything in the Old Town.”

The best thing about the Oran is its location. It is a short walk away to the tram stop but best of all, it is a walkable distance for most folks (I'm in my 60s) to the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Topkapi and the Galata Bridge...in one day if you aren't a heavy shopper. The rooms are small but comfortable. Best to have a room off the street and with windows facing the outside (there are a few with windows over the lobby area....and these can get noisy). Breakfast buffet was good by standards of other Turkish hotels. Hotel staff was friendly and helpful though not super fluent in English. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others who want feel a location is more important than luxury.

I stayed here about the same time as the reviewer who complained the hotel was too hot. In fact the weather in Istanbul was unseasonally cold and we were glad of the heating when coming back from a long day of sightseeing. The rooms looking onto the street were noisy; the others looked into the central well and got the noise of the kitchen extractor unit. The hotel is dark with lots of brown wood but our room was adequate and clean. The staff spoke little English but were as helpful as possible. The restaurant on the top floor had a wonderful view over the city but does not open every evening. One night we ate downstairs and found a limited menu but managed to put away very succulent lamb chops and the prices were reasonable. Over our stay we stayed in 6 hotels and the Oran's beer was the cheapest by quite a long way. Breakfast was an adequate buffet though a limited choice of bread and watery orange juice.
This is a city centre hotel, in a pleasant area where I never felt ill at ease; we got what we paid for.

Spent time here in March with Gate 1 travel; the rooms are fairly small, the beds are comfy and the bathroom was more than adequate. The problem was that the central heat was on and you can not turn it off. We did open our windows that make the temperature tolerable. These Turks seem cold natured; the hotels could save themselves money on letting patrons turn off the heat. The breakfast was adequate and the location of the hotel is really good; just three blocks from the tram which will take you to most places you will want to see. Ask for a room that does not face the street....it seems to be noiser at night than in the day time, and if you want to open your windows....well, you get the picture. I do highly recommend Gate 1 Tour to Turkey; it was inexpensive, comprehensive and lots of fun. We had a great guide, Neco, who was a literal encyclopedia of Turkish history. Turkey is a wonderful country with really nice people.

I was booked into this hotel for a Gate1 tour of Turkey. It was okay. It is not a four star hotel, but it isn't bad.

The hotel is fairly well situated, about three blocks away from the tram stop. The hotel was three tram stops from the Aya Sophia and Blue Mosque. It was also easy to go to the Taksim area from the hotel. Just take the tram to the end of the line and then take the vernicular. The cost of the tram is 1.30 Turkish Lire.

I had a fairly decent room. I had a small loveseat that made into a twin bed, as well as two twin beds in the room. The room was dark but the room and the bathroom were very clean. The breakfast was not very good, but you could have cereal and breads, as well as cold cuts and poached eggs. The coffee was good, but beware the orange juice--I think it was Tang.

The area around the hotel is not really bad--I walked at night coming back to the hotel from the tram and I felt safe.

The location of Oran Hotel near the Covered Bazaar is handy. The hotel caters to tour groups and has a nice breakfast buffet. However, the front desk speaks little English and tends to be rude. One person in our party received the following response, "Do I look like a travel agent?" The most serious problem for anyone older is the bathtubs. The edge of the bathtub is MILES from the floor. Getting out of the tub was an adventure I didn't need. In short, persons with the slightest mobility problems should avoid this hotel.

Agree with the other reviews in the main, with a few differences and additions:
Some of the complaints in the other reviews seem directed at European hotels in general. The Oran didn't seem especially different from our other hotel stays abroad.
We found the front desk staff to be very helpful in several requests.
There is a small but professional Turkish bath in the hotel that gives a discount to guests; they do a nice job.
We had 2 different rooms, at the beginning and end of the trip; both were relatively large and comfortable. The first one was noisy, mainly due to a Friday night disco nearby. The second was blessedly quiet.
There are a lot of tour groups using the hotel, but that didn't create any real problems.
The location is quite good, for walking or taking the tram to the key sites. There are small grocery stores and modest restaurants in the neighborhood.
The food at the Oran (especially main courses) was mediocre, although they had great yogurt. Try the charming restaurant (Sehzade Mehmed Sofrast) in the former medressa at the nearby mosque.

We stayed here as part of a Gate 1 tour.

The Oban is well located for touring Istanbul ... a few blocks from the tram line, and within walking distance of interesting mosques.

The front rooms are noisy ... they face on a very busy wholesale street. The desk staff is not fluent in English, but make an attempt.

We stayed there at the beginning of the trip and had an adequate room with twin beds and a decent bath with shower. The end of the trip stay, which was for three nights, was in a very small front room with twin beds in which we could hardly turn around.

I do not understand why European hotels do not have any clothing storage space, particularly when booking stays of more than one night. The Oban had NO drawers into which one could unpack. And only one luggage rack, which also seems to be the norm ... even in a twin bedded room. Do they assume that all travelers will share one suitcase and will never want to get to the clothing packed on the bottom?

The area around the hotel is a wholesale district which caters to Russians. It is culturally interesting, but there are no restaurants to speak of unless one walks over to the viaduct region.

It was clean however. A plus certainly.
