“Really amazing luxury experience”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

I really liked the Shangri La, been to Istanbul many times, but this was the best stay.

i was there on business, had a BMW 7 Series pick me up form the airport, to arrive at a beautiful lobby, but the check in was done at the convenience of my room. Which had a Bosphorus. Its next to the ferry terminal, but you cant hear anything if the window is closed.

Nicely located next to shops and restaurants, ferry terminal, bus station, and a very secure area.

Very nice rooms, spacious, clean, classic and fresh, relaxing theme and luxurious. Had Bulgari amenities in the bathroom.

Great breakfast, WiFi everywhere !

Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: sea view, premiere.

Since I have stayed at multiple Shangri-La throughout the world let me do two reviews. As a general hotel it is nice enough. I would place it as a standard Hilton or Marriott at any large US city. Nothing special or groundbreaking. Compared to the Shangri-La elsewhere in the world this place should be renamed ASAP.

- I paid for the Deluxe Bosphorus Room and was given a room with a partial view at best. The room had stains on the furniture and carpet (big ones) which is very unacceptable for this chain.
- The cleaning crew came at 0930 or not at all. When they did come you best be sure your do not disturb is on as you get 3 seconds after their knock to lock the door...they are coming in.
- 2 bottles of water in a country the tap water isn't exactly drinkable.
- Constant calls to confirm things. Disorganization in all ways. The Bar is enjoyable enough, though like most of the hotel, English is spotty at best. Even German and Dutch were not usable.
- The hotel is an area outside the main attractions so get ready to do some walking or slow Istanbul traffic fighting. My recommendation is head somewhere else till these guys figure out how to be a nicer hotel.

Positive is they did allow us to check in early and later. I guess this makes up for putting us in a lower class room than paid for.

Stayed there for business during this November i really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of the hotel, never feels crowded and you never need to wait for the elevator or for any of the hotel services.

Even though i am not a big fan of neo classical decor the folks at Shangri La got it right and really felt at ease with the blue hues of the decorations, the bohemia crystal chandeliers are also a treat to the eye.

As it’s expected at Shangri La hotel staff was always friendly and helpful addressing all my needs and concerns. I attended a business conferences and the hotel catering staff servicin the meeting area was spot on. I enjoyed the easy street access the nearby ferry and bus station lends a nice life and vibe to the surroundings, being literally next door to the maritime museum is also nice.

The only cons that I would point out as another reviewer did is the lack of a terrace or open spaces with view to the river, I was bit disappointing by the lack of a terrace bar with a nice river view, come summer people are going to miss an outdoor pool as well. I was also expecting the gym or health room to have some type of view but it didn’t as it was in the basement; I guess there is only so much you can do with “X” meters of property facing the water.

My room had a half view of The Bosphorous’ that was Superb and that I really enjoyed, even though the hotel is very close to the street sound insulation is perfect and you don’t get any street noise.

Room Tip: If you can afford a room with river view is well worth it, even a half view is worth it.

I am a huge fan of the Shangri-La group of hotels and i was excited to stay at this new (ish) property in Istanbul.

The location of the hotel on the waterfront at Besiktas is great, with views over the ferry terminals and between a couple of museums. Be aware that the hotel does not have any "grounds" save for a paved area at the front, which is used for access to parking and arrivals and departures. The location is right next to the various ferry terminals for the pedestrian ferries to Uskadar (Asia) etc and a 2 min walk to the bus station. Our car from the airport had to pass the hotel and then go through the bus station/ferry station to get to the front of the hotel - this could be frustrating at busy times, but then when isn't the traffic in Istanbul frustrating?

The hotel has lots of security, both on the gates and an airport style body scanner as you enter. This is painless and once they know you, it is very relaxed and informal. I was used to this type of security in Egypt but had not encountered it before in Istanbul although I suspect that this is due to the rioting a few months ago. You will also see a huge number of armed police, police coaches and riot vehicles who seem to be "stationed" at the rear of the hotel.

On arrival this hotel really has the wow factor. The lobby and central domed topped atrium seem to glisten and sparkle with the central staircase and huge cascading chandelier as a central focal point. This is extremely clever design in that the hotel has 3 levels below ground, but the way it has been opened up, it feels open and light. Genius design. The physical building inside belies it's somewhat unremarkable exterior (not unpleasant but just not very architecturally inspiring). We were very warmly greeted by an army of staff, all of whom seemed genuinly pleased at our arrival and proud of their working environment. Something I really like about Shangri-La's is that their staff always seem to have a great pride in what they do and in "service from the heart" which is sincere and feels natural, charming and gracious. Even the luggage porter and the boy who brought us our welcome tea to the room were so charming. How nice to feel so welcome after a long and tiring journey.

The check in is done "in-room", which is nice, using some new technology, including a hand-scanner for your passports and a tablet to complete all formalities with the least fuss possible. Our host showed us our room, which was a deluxe bosphorus view room. It is sumptuously appointed with so much attention to detail, including so many amenities too numerous to mention, and loads of lighting options plus a baby Nespresso machine with lots of capsules! A boon for a partner who only grunts prior to having his first coffee in the morning.

The bathroom is a bathroom snob's dream. Whilst it only has one sink, it has a huge walk in shower with a marble corner seat, a drencher head, and an ordinary shower head. A slight niggle in that the water pressure was unimpressive and the tempersature control on the shower was too tight and almost impossible to adjust. This was mentioned to the front-desk but no discernable differnece was made. The toilet is in it's own room off the bathroom and the huge, deep, oval bathtub which fills quickly, and guess what? Typical of Shangri-La's attentiion to detail, they provide sachets of bath salts to soften the water. From the bath you can watch the bathroom TV that is inset into the mirror along with a useful digital clock. The TV needed to be tuned in so the channel list matched those on the bedroom list - a slight oversight. A few niggles with the bathroom - I love to get out of the shower and be enveloped by a huge towel. The towels were large but not bath sheets. I'm a large chap, so maybe they were not designed for me. They also provide lovely Bulgari bath amenities. I was frustrated that the room attendants hardly replenished them, so I had to call down for extras twice in 4 days. I am sure that they are expensive, but it felt like they were being rationed and with 2 of us in the room both having a shower in the morning and then either a bath and shower each evening after the spa or walking around Istanbul, we did need more than was provided.

The room itself is decorated in a beautiful relaxing and elegant colour palate with hues of pale blues and greens. As for the bed - If I could have taken it home, I would have! I love Shangri-La beds and their beautiful bedding and wonderful pillows so much so that I have my best nights sleep in their beds (please tell me where I can buy one). Only negative about the room was the AC. It did not seem to work properly, plus you needed a degree in engineering to work it. It had a lot of buttons and kept going into "learning" and "upload" modes. The room staff did seem to keep putting the temperature up when they serviced the room and so when we retrurned it was very hot. Easy to remedy in November - by opening the window. The window did give a nice breeze but you could not leave it open at night as the street noise whilst not overwhelming is not very condusive to a good nights sleep.

On arrival they were serving afternoon tea in the lobby. They have a tea menu of 101 teas. Yes - 101! We were told by two members of staff that the service of afternoon tea continued to 7.30pm. We called down and booked a table for tea at 6.15pm and took our time unpacking. When we got to the lobby lounge, no-one had any record of our booking and we were told that the tea service finished at 5.30pm. Not the end of the world but annoying when if we had known this, we would have gone straight to tea and unpacked later, especially as we were both so very hungry and tea looked lovely. We had some tea to drink and ordered a sandwhich and a mezze plate to share. The sandwich arrived and they had already halved it and put it on two plates. We never received the other item, I think it was forgotton about.

There were quite a few people in the lobby lounge and I found it rather annoying that people were on speaker phones etc., but maybe that it just my intolerance? Maybe a more mature and experienced team might have asked them politely to consider other guests.

Le Bar - a very cosy room, had a fantastic Jazz trio (Piano, Sax and vocalist). We could hear them from our seating in the lobby lounge whcih was great apart from the fact that the classical music was still being played throughout the lobby which made neither clearly audable and was a little irritating.

We decided to move onto the bar to listen to the trio. We enjoyed a few glasses of fizz and loved the jazz musicians. Superb. The bar is nice although a little drafty especially with people using the doors to go outside to smoke. I'm sure in summer that this is not a problem but in winter it is. The lobby and bar servers were charming and efficient.

One thing that i think really sets good and great hotels apart are a good conciegre team. We had a brilliant experience with Alan and the team at the Shangri-La in Paris. They talked to us on arrival and got to know what we wanted to do and really "read" their guests. As a result our visit there was remarkable, unique and memorable. Sadly this was not our experience here. Our first encounter with the concierge was later on Friday evening when we asked for his advice. We both occasionally enjoy smoking shisha/hubbly bubbly pipes, which we know are called Nargile in Turkey, so I had googled to see if there was one local to the hotel. I found a few so asked the concierge to tell me what they were like, exactly where to find them and which we should try and what food we could get there. (We wanted to eat as we had not had the afternoon tea as originally planned). The young guy on the desk was high-handed and so dismissive. He was very arrogant, telling us that he "could not vouch for the quality of any of the local ones" and that we should take a taxi to ones some distance away, when we knew there were at least 4-6 within a few minutes walk. He almost seemed to imply that we were mad even contemplating going to one locally. Maybe he was on commission for the taxi drivers, who have a dreadful reputation for ripping off tourists in the city. He vaguely and begrudgingly gave us directions to a restaurant (Hamadan - i think) and said that one was "nearby". Had i not been tenacious and asked some locals we would not have found a shisha cafe that was not only great, has a huge wrap around open terrace, 4 floors up overlooking the bridge and the bosphorus, only 2 mins from the hotel. The shisha was terrific as was the food and we paid less than the taxi would have cost us to go where he suggested. That was annoying. The older concierge was very good helping us plan our saturday and sunday excursions. His advice to take the ferries to the old city really enhanced our uderstanding of the geography of the city - you can really see it from the water, plus it is a very relaxed way to travel for a few Tl (3 tl per token). The young lady who was also on the desk was also very good, helpful and kind. We had another encounter with this young chap who this time when asked for the address of a particular restaurant, (so we could walk there) again strongly suggested a taxi and just circled a huge area on the map. Unhelpful and arrogant again. He seemed to think by doing this we would be forced to get a taxi. No - I just asked for the address once again and finally he provided it and we walked there in 10 minutes. (Midpoint Cafe - A great relaxed spot for lunch or dinner with branches across the city), but we loved the one in Maca (sp?) and were welcommed back like old friends having had lunch there a day or so before. When you do not know a city a good concierge can make your visit - This man could have ruined ours and i mentioned this to the duty manager, who said that they would monitor the situation - I suggested that some training and change in attitude was what was needed rather than "monitoring`'.

By complete contrast, our experience at Shang Palace on Satuday night was an utter delight from start to finish. We had eaten at the one in Paris, but I have to say that this one seems to have the edge. It is superb. Again they did not seem to be certain of our booking, but we were seated on one of the sofas with a large table. Good to relax in comfort between courses of magnificently prepared chinese food, that were served over a good period of time. Nancy Zhang, the Chinese Operations Manager and her entire team from Maitre d', Sommelier, adorable and charming local Turkish waitress all looked after us with an exemplary level of service that is only matched in top Michelin-Starred establishments. The sommelier recommended a wine that I was sceptical about. I challenged him on this and he gave the most eloquent explanation as to why this wine goes with the food we had chosen and indeed, it complimented it perfectly. (I only regret not getting the name of it, so I could buy some at duty free and take some home - If you eat there - have it - it is the local Turkish Sauvignon Blanc, not cheap at Tl 260 per bottle but divine and as good as any top of the line French Classic). We both ate and were treated like a couple of Chinese Emporers despite this being a busy saturday evening service for the team. Excellent, I cannot praise it highly enough.

The same can also be said of our experiecne at IST TOO - which we only went to for breakfast, but what a buffet selection, and what wonderful staff.

We were told when we signed our bill at Shang Palace that we were entitled to a 20% discount as resident guests. This had not been mentioned to us before, and if it had been, we might have also eaten in Ist Too for lunch or dinner. We were also told of some free reflexology treatments we were entitled to after our spa treatments. Why keep these promotions a secret? By that time it was too late to have them. That seems like a silly oversight. The spa, pool and gym staff were great and the facilities second to none. My full body massage on Sunday evening was "just ok" and rather unremarkable for the money. Maybe the therapist had had a long day as our bookings were for 6pm but my partner enjoyed his. I felt that unlike the Chi Spas in Muscat, Oman and Vilingilli in the Maldives that this was less of an experience and more of a plain vanilla massage, that I could have received anywhere and paid a lot less for! It wasn't bad, it just wasn't fabulous. The sauna and steam areas are lovely, although it is rather disconcerting to have female staff coming through to collect clients for treatments in a men-only area.

There is a lift from the Spa to the room floors. This enables you to return to your room without going through the public areas of the hotel. There was a large wedding on which was conducted on a dais below the huge chandelier. If you are leaving the health club to go to the lift you walk along the landing in full view of the wedding guests. This is embaressing for the guest and annoying for the event holder and guests. When there is an event on in that area of the hotel fitness club staff should direct guests back to their rooms via the spa and then the spa lift, which would avoid this situatiuon.

One final point - The hotel offers an airport transfer service, boiokable through the hotel and provided by a 3rd party limo company. This is priced accroding to the hotel website at €175 each way. It is a long way to the airport and yes the traffic in Istanbul can be tedious and time-consuming however for that price i'd expect a ceremonial golden coach and police escort! We used Istanbul Airport Taxis who charged €30 per journey. They were very efficient and on the way in they were at arrivals and escorted us to a 6 seater Mercedes VIvano (which was spotless and very comfy). The return journey vehicle was a small Mercedes mini bus (just for the two of us) which was good although not as nice as the other vehicle and the driver was a little overconfident at times and on his mobile a couple of times during the journey, (which I thought that he should not be). Saying that, I'd use them again, as he was there at 12.50pm for a 1.15pm pick up and dropped us at the Terminal building at 1.40pm! . I would take the hotel transport if it were say €60 per trip but at €175, each way it seems to me that the hotel and the third party provider are both making a significant mark up!

Overall, we loved the hotel and we look forward to returning to it again as despite the "niggles" it really is a fantastic property with some marvellous members of staff that made our visit memorable. I do hope that the feedback provided here and given to the duty manager prior to our checkout will help the team impriove their service still further. We both can't wait to return. And oh - please pop a Shangri La bed in the post, please!

Room Tip: Walk to the tram, take the ferries rather than taking taxis. Explore the macka area of the city.

We are pleased that you liked the design of our hotel and our rooms. Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul is located on the site of a former tobacco warehouse from the 1930s. The warehouse’s restored six-storey Neo-Classical façade and two carefully preserved 150- and 350-year-old Sycamore trees in the courtyard give testament to the past. The interior design of the hotel takes design cues from the glamorous Dolmabahce Palace with swathes of marble, glittering chandeliers and a mix of European, Asian and Turkish design. In the rooms, rich teal, crème and caramel colour scheme is used to create an elegant and soothing atmosphere.

Delivering a high quality of service is very important for us and it is a pleasure to learn that our colleagues were able to provide you the hospitality from the heart we are known for. We give great attention to our guests’ Shangri-La experience and try our best to provide a flawless service from arrival to departure.

As per the amenity replenishments and room temperature, kindly be assured that your preferences have been noted and our team is ready to offer you a room upon your choices.

We are delighted to read that you had a pleasant sleeping experience. We use Simmons Beds and Mattresses at Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you need further information about the beds.

Regarding your dining experience, we are pleased that you have enjoyed Shang Palace and Le Bar, but also sorry to hear that you had encountered difficulties at Lobby Lounge. Please kindly be informed that we have shared these service lapses with our restaurant managers and the situation will be under inspection. We would be pleased to share that, our sommelier selected the wine Sevilen 900 Fume Blanc for you at Shang Palace.

We would like to highlight that we have an exquisite list of restaurants and cafes, selected elaborately by the service and quality they offer. Our concierge team is responsible for suggesting venues and transportation alternatives that our clientele will be gratified for definite. Although, we sincerely would like to apologize for the unpleasant service elapses you had experienced with the team. We go to great lengths at our hotels to ensure that our guests are given the attention and comfort they deserve. Your feedback will be a great motivation for us to improve our services.
